Summary
Long Island, NY, boasts many historic lighthouses, including one commissioned by George Washington. Interestingly, Suffolk County has the highest number of lighthouses of any county in the United States. This article explores some of these impressive structures that grace the shores of the island and welcome visitors to explore their history.
Fire Island Lighthouse
On Fire Island’s west end, east of Robert Moses State Park, the Fire Island Lighthouse opened its doors in 1827. This lighthouse remains open year-round, except on Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter. Visitors can enjoy a museum and gift shop, along with seasonal events like the New Year’s Day Hike and Lighthouse Tower Tour, and Valentine’s Day events.
Adventure-seeking travelers can purchase tickets for tours that lead up the 192 winding steps of the lighthouse tower—offered daily during the summer and on weekends in other seasons.
Additionally, couples can hold their wedding ceremony on the terrace of the Keepers Quarters (receptions not allowed).

Horton Point Lighthouse
The Horton Point Lighthouse, which began operating in 1857, is situated in Southold on Long Island’s North Fork. The lighthouse and its nautical museum welcome guests from Memorial Day through the second Monday in October, open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free for children under 12, while adults may check the Horton Point Lighthouse website for current pricing.
Visitors can enjoy a picnic lunch in the park’s eight-acre expanse while taking in sweeping views of Long Island Sound. A natural trail and 120 steps lead down to the beach, further enhancing the visit.

Huntington Harbor Lighthouse
The Huntington Harbor Lighthouse, built in 1912, showcases an impressive Beaux Arts architectural style. Tours are available during the summer and early fall, beginning with a scenic 15-minute boat ride to the lighthouse. Note that children must be over 5 years old to participate. Long Island’s Offshore Lighthouses
Moreover, numerous lighthouses are situated off the shores of Long Island. Some of these lighthouses can be accessed through cruises organized by groups such as East End Lighthouses, the Long Island chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society, and Long Island Lighthouse Safaris, Inc.
Montauk Lighthouse
Lastly, the Montauk Lighthouse holds the title of being the oldest—and the first—lighthouse in New York State, inaugurated in 1796 during George Washington’s presidency.
If you’re feeling adventurous, consider climbing the 137 iron steps to the top of the tower, where a spectacular view awaits (available from March to December). For those seeking a romantic setting, the lighthouse also offers the opportunity to hold wedding ceremonies.
Throughout the year, exciting special events occur at the Montauk Lighthouse, including the annual Lighting of the Lighthouse and Christmas at the Lighthouse, both taking place in November.
