The World’s Most Iconic Movie Set: New Research Reveals All

The Most Googled Filming Locations Around the World

Ever been so inspired by a movie scene’s gorgeous backdrop that you simply had to plan a trip to see it for yourself? You’re not alone. According to Spin Genie, an online gambling website out of Canada, millions of people are searching for exact destinations from their favorite movies to plot out a scene-stealing getaway.

Top Film Locations People Want to Visit

To determine which film destinations people desired to visit most, the team created a list of what it believed to be the most iconic film destinations globally. They referred to sources like Rough Guides and Delicious, and included insights from iBestTravel. The team then proceeded to utilize Instagram to search each location’s hashtag, documenting how many times the location was mentioned, while conducting a similar search on TikTok. (Data was collected from both sites on August 31, 2023, meaning the number of posts may have increased since then.)

Moreover, Google Keyword Planner was employed to analyze how often each location was searched worldwide between August 2022 and July 2023. Additionally, data from Kayak was used to establish the average price of a hotel near or in each location per night. Each destination was then ranked based on all four factors, obtaining a normalized score between one and ten.

After thorough research, Petra, Jordan emerged as the top film location that people are searching for on the internet, leading the classification as the “most iconic film location across the globe.”

“The famous archaeological site is most well-known for appearing in the third Indiana Jones film, ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,’” the findings revealed. “Petra is featured in over 1.7 million Instagram posts and has garnered more than 1.1 billion views on TikTok, in addition to receiving over 10.4 million searches on Google between August 2022 and July 2023.”

Costs for Visiting

Curious about potential expenses for visiting Petra? According to the research, the average nearby hotel costs approximately $72 per night.

The second most searched filming location is Salzburg, Austria, with more than 9 million Google searches, over 3.7 million Instagram mentions, and a staggering one billion TikTok mentions—largely attributed to its famous appearance in “The Sound of Music.” The average hotel rate in Salzburg is reported to be around $183 per night.

Following closely, Oxford University ranks third for the most Googled film locations, receiving nearly eight million searches, thanks to its prominent features in the Harry Potter franchise. Hotel prices in Oxford are relatively higher, averaging $261 per night.
