Uncertain T: An Automotive Icon’s Revival
Recently, mere days before the Grand National Roadster Show, the legendary Ford Model T-based hot rod known as “Uncertain T” resurfaced. This vehicle, which had been off the radar since the mid-1970s, was located and purchased by Galpin Ford’s Beau Boeckmann. The rod will be displayed 100-percent “as-is” at the upcoming show in Pomona, California.
Origins of the Uncertain T
Originally crafted by Steve Scott, an associate editor for a notable automotive magazine, Uncertain T boasts a fiberglass body mounted on a hand-fabricated aluminum chassis. It features elements from a 1921 Model T, such as headlights and a radiator shell. The vehicle is powered by a 384 cubic-inch, 1957 Buick Nailhead V-8 engine with Hilborn stack mechanical fuel injection, paired with a 1955 Pontiac hydro automatic transmission. A quick-change rearend completes its formidable driveline.
A Legacy of Achievement
For nearly six years following its introduction in 1965, the Uncertain T toured the U.S., claiming numerous prestigious custom-car awards. It featured prominently in major automotive magazines and was even replicated by Monogram as a 1/24-scale plastic model kit. This level of recognition solidified its status as an exceptional custom car, consequently ensuring its place in American automotive history.
The Mysterious Journey
For nearly 50 years, the fate of Uncertain T was a topic of discussion and speculation, with its whereabouts often mythologized. Stories of the car have circulated through generations, and numerous Uncertain T clones have been crafted as tributes. Remarkably, its recent recovery occurred from a Van Nuys, California, warehouse not far from Galpin’s headquarters, reigniting excitement within the hot rod community.
Future Plans for Restoration
Beau, along with Galpin’s lead restoration specialist Dave Shuten, plans to meticulously restore Uncertain T to its original configuration and appearance. This restoration will not only honor the car’s legacy but will also be recorded for future generations to appreciate.
In addition to debuting at the Grand National Roadster Show, the Uncertain T will also be showcased as a barn find at the Detroit Autorama in March before returning to Southern California for restoration.
