Budget-Friendly Guide to Disney World
Here is the truth: Disney World™ in Orlando, Florida is expensive. However, it’s not any more or less expensive than other bucket list trips. And make no mistake, this is a bucket list experience. It’s a rite of passage.
When my daughter was four, she refused to watch movies but was completely obsessed with Elsa. Therefore, my husband and I took her to Disneyland to meet Elsa and Anna, see the live show, and feel the princess magic. Fast forward six years, and that memory remains so core to us that when we stepped on the Frozen ride at Epcot, and Anna started singing “for the first time in forever,” we exchanged teary-eyed looks.
That trip when she was four? It cost about $1500, and it was perfect.
Accommodation Considerations
Start with your accommodation when planning a trip to Disney World. This destination is an experience in itself. Booking at a Disney resort includes parking (if driving) and transportation within Disney World. For those flying in, various transportation options are available from the airport (for an extra fee). Additionally, staying at a Disney resort allows you early park entry and late park stays, making it a worthwhile choice.
- Save: If camping appeals to you, consider booking a tent or RV site at Fort Wilderness. Pets are welcome, and the facilities include a large pool with a water slide, horseback riding experiences, and a campfire sing-along with Chip and Dale.
- Spend: For a family-friendly hotel experience, check out Art of Animation. This resort embodies Disney magic from the entrance to the themed shower, featuring larger-than-life character sketches and a Nemo-themed pool.
- Spend More: Consider staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge. It offers a safari-like experience, allowing guests to view giraffes from their balconies, creating a serene environment after busy theme park visits.
Park Tickets and Lightning Lanes
Before deciding on the number of days in the parks, consider purchasing Lightning Lanes. If you’re visiting with younger children and prefer to skip intense roller coasters, this advice may not apply. However, if even one person in your group wants to ride Rise of the Resistance (which I highly recommend), a Lightning Lane single-pass is necessary. Time is money, and waiting in long lines can significantly cut into your park experience.
- Save: Opt for a three-day package with at least one Park Hopper day and Lightning Lanes. This allows you to experience the highlights without feeling rushed.
- Spend: If the budget allows, four days and five nights are ideal, providing ample time to experience each park leisurely, including evening visits to different parks.
- Spend More: For a more immersive experience, stay for a week, utilizing Park Hopper passes and Lightning Lanes for sought-after attractions.
Dining Options at Disney World
Disney World offers over 550 food vendors, ranging from quick-service carts to upscale dining. For calmer dining experiences, explore resort restaurants. Here are a few tips:
- Save: Instacart fresh food to your Disney World resort. Most resorts have in-room refrigerating options, and guests are welcome to bring non-alcoholic drinks and snacks into the parks.
- Spend: Enjoy quick-service options like the popular fish tacos at Hollywood Studios or spring rolls at Magic Kingdom.
- Spend More: For a more sophisticated experience, book a table at upscale restaurants where a memorable culinary adventure awaits you.
Character Dining Experiences
Character Dining is an excellent opportunity to meet beloved Disney characters in a relaxed environment. My kids enjoyed the interaction immensely.
- Save: Opt for breakfast at venues like Minnie’s Beach Bash Breakfast for more affordable pricing, while still enjoying character interactions.
- Spend: Consider Chef Mickey’s for a lively buffet experience featuring the fab five in a stylish setting.
- Spend More: Experience fine dining at Cinderella’s Castle for an enchanting atmosphere and the chance to meet numerous princesses.
Souvenir Recommendations
When it comes to souvenirs:
- Save: Consider pin trading, which is an inexpensive way to engage with the parks and build a collection.
- Spend: Ears and an autograph book make for perfect keepsakes that can capture magical moments.
- Spend More: Schedule appointments for the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique to transform your child into their favorite character, creating lasting memories.
