How Long Will National Mourning Last?

A period of mourning will take place, although only the date of the Queen’s funeral (yet to be announced) will be a national holiday. A period of royal mourning will be observed from now until seven days after the Queen’s funeral.

When Will the Queen’s Funeral Take Place?

The Queen’s funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19 September. Prior to this, the Queen’s coffin will lie in state at Westminster Hall in London for four days, allowing members of the public to pay their respects. On the day of the funeral, schools and businesses will close, there will be a two-minute national silence, and the Stock Exchange will cease operations. A proclamation was issued stating that the day of the Queen’s funeral (Monday 19 September) will be an official Bank Holiday across the UK.

How Many Bank Holiday Days Will There Be?

In addition to the day of the Queen’s funeral, King Charles’s Coronation Day will also be a national holiday, although this event is likely to occur several months, or even a year later. This scheduling is intended to provide a respectful gap between the country’s mourning of the Queen and the celebration of a new monarch. Union flags will fly at half mast until the morning after the Queen’s funeral, returning to full mast on Saturday 10 September, one hour after Proclamations in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales in recognition of the new Sovereign.

What Closes When the Queen Dies?

Sporting events such as football matches and horse racing events were cancelled on Friday 9 September and throughout the subsequent weekend. BBC Proms were also cancelled on both Friday 9 September and Saturday 10 September. However, other cultural events like theatre performances and concerts will proceed with a minute’s silence. Additionally, planned rail strikes scheduled during the mourning period (Thursday 15 September and Saturday 17 September) have been postponed.

On the day of the Queen’s funeral, the London Stock Exchange will close, while schools are expected to shut their doors. Businesses are likely to give their employees the day off as well.

When Will Prince Charles Become King?

Officially, King Charles became King on the day that the Queen passed away, with an announcement confirming his status as the new monarch by the Ascension Council on Saturday 10 September at 10 am in the State Apartments of St James’s Palace. At 11 am, the Principal Proclamation was read from the balcony at St James’s Palace, followed by a second Proclamation at midday at the Royal Exchange in the City of London.
