For over 40 years, Denise Pozzi-Escot has been one of Peru’s leading archaeologists, helping to draft the country’s cultural policy and serving on the National Commission of Archaeology. She has studied and taught in Paris, as well as throughout Peru.

Discovering the Beauty of Peru

I live in Lima, the capital of Peru, which is uniquely located on the edge of the sea. The city boasts a historic center that is UNESCO-protected. Notably, Lima is home to over 200 huacas, or pre-Hispanic archaeological sites, which are integral to the city’s landscape. These sites are part of more than 100,000 archaeological sites across the expansive territory of Peru, with a history that spans over 3,000 years. Peru’s natural landscape includes coastal desert, high Andean highlands, and lush Amazon rainforest, with over 40 different languages spoken by its diverse inhabitants.

Connection to Culture and Heritage

My work involves reconstructing our past, allowing us to envision a better future. Through efforts in heritage sites and museums, we aim to enhance the quality of life for all Peruvians.

Culinary Delights of Peru

Peru is renowned for its incredible food. For a flavorful Creole breakfast, visit MÓ-Café in San Isidro, famous for its brunches, or El Chinito in Miraflores, known for its delicious breakfast offerings.

Lunch Options

For lunch, stroll through Barranco, where Isolina serves traditional Creole dishes. For those seeking jungle-inspired cuisine, Amaz and Maido are excellent choices. To savor delicious ceviche and seafood dishes, El Pez Amigo is a must-visit. Finally, dining at Astrid & Gastón, located next to the ancient site of Huaca Pucllana, offers a unique backdrop to your meal.

Hidden Gems and Experiences

While Lima offers many popular attractions, there are non-touristy spots worth exploring. The sanctuary of Pachacamac in southern Lima, complete with two museums, is an enriching experience. Additionally, the peaceful El Parque del Olivar in San Isidro is perfect for a serene walk. Consider catching a show at the Centro Cultural de la Católica, followed by a local meal.

What to Bring Home

When it comes to unique souvenirs, Peruvian handicrafts from the Miraflores Indian Market are excellent choices. For local artwork, explore Dédalo or Indigo.

Viewpoints Worth Visiting

In Barranco and Miraflores, you can find stunning spots with ocean views that showcase unforgettable sunsets, particularly during the summer months.

Discover these experiences and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and history that make Peru a unique destination.
