Run with a Twist: Marathons for Drink Lovers

The idea of running a marathon – or even a 5km fun run – often conjures images of punishing training sessions and strict nutrition plans. However, there are numerous events around the world that offer runners the exhilarating sense of achievement along with delightful alcohol tastings along the way.

If you enjoy a drink and are looking for a fitness challenge that accommodates your lifestyle, these six boozy marathons and races could entice you to lace up your running shoes.

Although several of these events are scheduled for 2021, changes may occur due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, check local listings for the latest information.

Beer Lovers’ Marathon, Liège, Belgium

The vibrant city of Liège in Belgium embraces sport each May, with hundreds taking to the streets in costumes to participate in the Beer Lovers’ Marathon. Live bands and DJs add to the festive atmosphere, ensuring a lively experience for everyone involved. According to official regulations, only “nice people who want to make sport and have fun” need apply, hence you’re likely to find excellent company on the course.

Lanzarote Wine Run, Spain

If you appreciate dry wines and breathtaking running routes, the Lanzarote Wine Run could be your ideal race. This unique event, set against the dramatic backdrop of Lanzarote’s Wine Country, takes place each June. The region’s skilled viticulturists have adapted traditional techniques to cultivate high-quality wines in the island’s volcanic soil. This half marathon traverses the island’s stunning landscape and features multiple bodegas such as El Grifo, the oldest winery in the Canary Islands. Participants can indulge in local wines at 10 refreshment stations along the route, with an option to run or hike a shorter 12km route if desired.

Bacchus Marathon & Half Marathon, Surrey, England

Denbies Wine Estate has been producing award-winning wine in England’s North Downs for over thirty years. What better way to savor the (fermented) fruits of their labor than by participating in the 26-mile Bacchus Marathon? This race takes you through the vineyards and across picturesque National Trust land, with tasting stops for Pinot. The Bacchus Marathon and Half Marathon occurs in September, with runners completing one or two laps of the course, each featuring five tasting stations offering Denbies’ wine, soft drinks, and snacks. Marathon du Médoc, Bordeaux, France

The Marathon du Médoc, an official event since 1985, is a boozy fitness endeavor that sets the standard for similar races. This full marathon winds through the renowned Médoc region near Bordeaux, featuring 23 tasting stops where runners can savor some of the world’s best wines. In addition to exquisite wines, participants can also enjoy delicious local delicacies such as cheese, oysters, and steak. The Dramathon, Speyside, Scotland

Scotland boasts numerous whisky distilleries and breathtaking landscapes, making it an excellent location for The Dramathon, held annually in October. Runners select from four race lengths: ‘Full dram’, ‘Half dram’, ‘Wee dram’, or ‘We dram’ (a team relay). Regardless of the distance, participants are guaranteed a scenic and challenging trail run. Starting at the Glenfarclas Distillery, full marathon runners embark on a challenging course that showcases portions of the Speyside Way, finishing at the famous Glenfiddich Distillery to celebrate their achievement with a dram (or two) of their preferred single malt.

The Beer Run, Australia, UK & USA

This fun-filled event takes place across four cities in Australia – Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane. The aim of The Beer Run is straightforward: visit five breweries and enjoy five pints during a 5km run. Coinciding with October’s legendary Oktoberfest, this short distance makes the event accessible to both seasoned athletes and those new to running. Due to its popularity, the concept has expanded with similar events now occurring in the UK and the US.

Shamrockin’ Run 8K Guinness Challenge Championship, New Orleans, USA

Each year in March around St Patrick’s Day, New Orleans hosts the 8km-long Shamrockin’ Run, welcoming speed enthusiasts, fun runners, and walkers alike (Irish-themed costumes are optional). For those seeking an extra challenge, participants can enter the Guinness Challenge Championship. Competitors not only race the course but also enjoy 4oz (125ml) cups of Guinness at specific “Consumption Zones” monitored by officials. Winning comes with more than just bragging rights; the fastest five men and women earn a case of Guinness to enjoy at the lively after-party.

This year’s event has been postponed to 2022.
