The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located on the grounds of the USS Intrepid, a 900-foot-long retired aircraft carrier, provides an engaging experience for visitors of all ages. This family-friendly museum showcases military, aviation, and space exploration technology through extensive exhibits, historical insights, and interactive displays. Attendees can explore the carrier’s decks, view the world’s first space shuttle (the Enterprise), and marvel at a supersonic Concorde. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your visit:
What Will I See?
- Aircraft Carrier Intrepid: The centerpiece of the museum, the USS Intrepid, was launched in 1943. Visitors can enjoy a rich collection of military aircraft representing all five branches of the U.S. armed forces on the flight deck, alongside breathtaking views of Midtown Manhattan. Explore the navigation bridge and various living quarters of naval personnel, as well as the Exploreum science area featuring hands-on exhibits suitable for families.
- Space Shuttle Pavilion: This exhibition hall connects visitors to the impressive space shuttle Enterprise and a Soyuz TMA-6 space capsule. Although it never flew into space, the shuttle was pivotal in shaping the U.S. space program.
- Submarine Growler: The Growler is the only American guided missile submarine open for public tours. Built in 1958, it offers a unique view into submarine life and operations, although children under 6 are not permitted due to safety regulations.
- British Airways Concorde: Located at the end of the pier, catch a glimpse of the record-breaking Concorde Alpha Delta G-BOAD, the fastest transatlantic passenger plane. Note that viewing is limited to the exterior, with access onboard available only through guided tours.
- Flight Simulators: The museum features a trio of advanced flight simulators for those seeking a stimulating experience.
Are Guided Tours Available?
Yes, several guided tours ranging from 45 to 100 minutes are available, enriching your visit by providing deeper insights into the Intrepid‘s history and more. Guided tours come with a supplemental charge, and they are the only option to board the Concorde. Knowledgeable docents often have military backgrounds, enhancing the educational aspect of the experience.
What About Exhibitions and Special Events?
The museum regularly presents special temporary exhibits and organizes children’s birthday parties, along with unique sleepover programs, adding to the engagement of visitors.
