Experience the Thrill of Jamaican Bobsledding at Mystic Mountain

Bobsledding in Jamaica

A Crazy Canuck and a Jamaican Bobsled

When we learned about the opportunity to go bobsledding in Jamaica, it instantly reminded us of Cool Runnings. As a travel enthusiast, I love connecting my adventures with iconic moments from movies, particularly the Jamaican bobsled team depicted in that unforgettable film starring John Candy.

However, the bobsleigh experience here is quite different from the movie. The course operates on a metal track rather than ice, all while temperatures soar to a balmy 32°C (89°F).

Bobsled Jamaica Tours

It’s advisable to arrange your Jamaican bobsled excursion ahead of time. A great option is to check out guided tours which often provide flexible cancellation policies and the convenience of last-minute bookings.

  • Mystic Mountain Entry with Bobsled – This tour includes the Sky Explorer Chairlift, Jamaican Bobsled Ride, Mystic Pavilion, lookout tower, waterslide, infinity pool, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, and a nature trail.

Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios

The Bobsled Adventure begins at Rainforest Adventures. On a beautiful morning, we made our way to Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios, ready to ascend to the summit via a 15-minute scenic ski lift journey.

The breathtaking views over the Caribbean Sea as we floated above the tropical rainforest were simply stunning. Moreover, Mystic Mountain, operated by Rainforest Adventures, offers much more than just bobsledding. Visitors can also enjoy zip lining, a delightful lunch, and a refreshing dip in the pool, complete with a thrilling water slide!

Bobsled Museum Jamaica

Jamaica-Canadian Connections

Upon reaching the summit, we discovered a fascinating museum that celebrates Jamaica’s notable celebrities. In addition to learning about the legendary Bob Marley, many impressive Jamaican athletes were also honored.

There are notable connections between Canada and Jamaica in the realm of international sports, particularly highlighted by the achievements of Canadian Olympic Gold Medalists Donavon Bailey and Ben Johnson, both of whom were born in Jamaica. (Notably, Ben had his medal stripped for doping, in contrast to others who escaped similar penalties, stirring frustrations still felt today.)

Moving on…

This museum visit was incredibly enriching. I absorbed much about Jamaica’s rich sports history while simultaneously experiencing thrilling adventures.

During our exploration, we encountered stories about many Jamaican athletes dominating track and field, including the current star Usain Bolt, criticized by Carl Lewis regarding doping allegations. Such commentary by Lewis, who has had his own controversies, certainly invites discussion.

But I digress. After touring the museum, it was finally our turn to take on the bobsleigh course in Jamaica.

Our Jamaican Bobsled Adventure

This Canuck is Going Crazy!

Stepping into our sleds was surprisingly straightforward. The primary focus was to use the brake only when necessary; we were advised to maintain full throttle, braking only upon nearing the red sign signaling the end of the course.

“Going fast is the way to go!” we were told, and we eagerly complied. If instructed to speed up, who are we to hold back?

It transformed into a thrilling ride of twists, turns, and exhilarating drops. As we zipped through the lush jungle, our laughter echoed, and I played photographer, capturing moments as I passed by Dave on the course.

The Bobsled Track

One drawback of the bobsled ride was how quickly it concluded. The experience was even shorter than a typical amusement park roller coaster, leaving us amazed at how fast we reached the end.

However, with a full-day explorer pass, the value becomes tremendous. This pass grants access to bobsledding, ziplining, the ski lift explorer, free museum entry, and you can even unwind at the swimming pool with a water slide to cool off from the tropical sun.

Ultimately, bobsledding in Jamaica proved to be a fantastic experience. Spending a day at Mystic Mountain allows you to fully embrace everything this incredible location has to offer.

Once your adventure concludes, consider enjoying some ziplining and indulging in lunch by the infinity pool. The Rainforest Adventure stands out as a unique excursion in the Caribbean, well worth experiencing during your visit to Jamaica.

Your adventure will generate delightful tales to share upon returning home, especially when reminiscing with friends during those classic John Candy films.
