Discover Jaran Hill: Breathtaking Sunset Views in Uluwatu, Bali

Batu Jaran Hill is a huge cliff near the famous Uluwatu Temple in south Bali, providing breathtaking views without the crowds or safety fences that often accompany popular tourist destinations. Here, you can witness waves crashing on the rocks below.

At this viewpoint, you might catch a glimpse of the Uluwatu pagoda in the distance, and if you’re lucky, see a few sea turtles swimming in the ocean. It’s an incredibly photogenic sunset spot that many tourists in Bali have yet to discover.

Having just found this location, it has quickly become one of my new favorite places to visit in Uluwatu!

Batu Jaran Hill – What To Expect

This scenic location is perfect for a peaceful picnic, strumming your guitar, and bidding farewell to the sun. There is even a lighthouse that you can climb for an enhanced view.

Batu Jaran Hill features two spectacular cliff viewpoints accessible within a short 5-minute walk. According to my wife, the name translates to ‘Horse Rock Hill’ in Bahasa, possibly due to the white cliff resembling a horse’s head.

However, it’s important to note that none of the cliffs have safety fencing, and the rock formations are eroding. As such, please exercise caution near the edge, as it plunges approximately 75 meters (250 feet) to the ground below.

During my couple of hours here, I only encountered two fishermen and a few playful monkeys. This site remains a hidden gem that boasts some of the most stunning views in south Bali.

Moreover, please keep the area clean, as there are no trash disposal facilities!

Entrance Fee

As of 2024, there is no entrance fee to access Batu Jaran Hill. However, this may change as its popularity continues to rise.

How To Get There

Batu Jaran Hill is situated in the far southwest corner of Bali island. It takes about an hour to drive from popular areas such as Kuta or Canggu, though this can be extended in heavy traffic, especially after sunset when visitors leave.

The best way to reach the hill is to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver for convenience. Only scooters can navigate all the way to the viewpoint; if you’re driving a car, you’ll need to stop near the entrance and walk approximately 5 minutes to reach the cliff.
