His new travel show has pitstops, craftsmanship, and a Slash cameo
22 February 2024
Jason Momoa is usually splashed across our screens as Aquaman, but his latest venture is a little closer to home than the DC Universe. On the Roam, a new eight-part docuseries, sees the Hollywood actor travel across the United States on his motorcycle. Throughout his journey, he makes stops to meet with homegrown artisans and craftsmen, many of whom are his friends and mentors. From the restoration of a 1936 Knucklehead bike in both Tennessee and North Carolina to guitar restoration with Slash at Gibson Guitars’ headquarters, the show showcases Momoa at his most authentic. He describes himself as “a vagabond, a dirtbag, a roamer” seeking out “the artists who are doing things out of their own shops and backyards.”
Exclusive Insights with Jason Momoa
iBestTravel caught up with Momoa to discuss his inspiring pitstops, his passion for craftsmanship, and where he dreams of riding his motorcycle next.
Favorite Locations on Your Journey
“I’m very well-travelled. I was born in Hawaii, grew up in Iowa, and I’ve been lucky enough to travel a lot for work. The real magic of the show, however, lies in the people I filmed with. There is a huge sense of intimacy in visiting places like Fort Worth and being welcomed into [knife-maker] Terry Shank’s home. This show showcases America opening its doors, inviting viewers into the lives of these artisans, creating genuine connections.”
Inspiration Behind the Show
“I’m really curious and eager to keep learning. When building my characters, I infuse my own style, and similarly, with this show, I wanted to present myself with my friends, united over our shared creative pursuits. My role as an actor is about studying life, and this series is just another avenue to explore storytelling through craftsmanship and restoration.”
Defining Good Craftsmanship
“Good craftsmanship can emerge from someone making something in their garage. Each craftsman I worked with showed unique styles and ideals of perfectionism. They may only produce a few items a year, but that speaks volumes about quality. I encourage everyone to seek these creatives. The human connections through such processes truly bond us.”
Influence of Family on Creativity
“My family played music; my grandfather led with electric guitar, while my uncles played bass, and I picked up the guitar. In Iowa, where I spent much of my upbringing, craftsmanship surrounded me. My mother’s creativity, from photography to her keen eye for aesthetics, shaped my worldview. This essence of creativity is at the heart of my show.”
Motorsport Enthusiasm
“My first motorcycle was a Harley Davidson at 19. I saved up while working on Baywatch Hawaii. That bike holds so much history for me and even features in my film, Road to Paloma. Riding across America remains a dream, and the first episode of On the Roam was a blast, especially when working with a rare 1927 Harley.”
Camaraderie and Shared Passion
“The bond with my friends—artists, craftsmen, builders—shines through this series. I am passionate about music and often jam with my musician friends. It’s an incredible experience that transports me beyond time.”
Filming with Slash at Gibson Guitars
“Slash is, in my opinion, the greatest guitarist in the world. I emulated his style for my Aquaman character. Interacting with him, particularly when visiting the guitars that shaped my childhood, was surreal. To later see him perform in London alongside my children was a beautiful experience.”
On the Roam, starring Jason Momoa, is available to stream in the UK. This show beautifully highlights the essence of artistry, craftsmanship, and genuine human connection.
