Jeep Wrangler Sales Plummet While Ford Mustang Sales Surge in August 2025

Sales Trends of the Ford Mustang and Jeep Wrangler in August 2024

A tale of two enthusiast vehicles has unfolded, with the Ford Mustang shining brightly while the Jeep Wrangler faces significant challenges. The Mustang is performing exceptionally well, reporting a notable increase of 55 percent in sales for August and nearly 18 percent year-to-date. In contrast, the Jeep Wrangler is struggling, down 17 percent, reflecting a broader trend of disappointing sales for Stellantis’ U.S. brands. Overall, Jeep has seen a decline of 19 percent, joining Ram and Chrysler in facing a downward spiral.

Challenges for Jeep Wrangler

The situation for Wrangler sales is so bleak that, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the company has temporarily halted production at the Toledo, Ohio plant responsible for manufacturing the Wrangler. Production resumed after operational adjustments. Similarly, the Grand Cherokee, produced in Detroit, also faced production stoppages. This challenging environment has resulted in an accumulation of Jeeps on dealer lots, attributed to “higher prices and fewer promotions than from rivals.”

Dealer Inventory Insights

Data from Cox Automotive outlines the current state of inventory where Jeep has about a four-month supply of vehicles on dealer lots, significantly higher than the average of 68 days. If this trend persists, it is likely that Jeep will need to consider price reductions and incentives to stimulate sales of the Wrangler and other models—crucial information for prospective buyers in the market for an SUV.

Mustang’s Strong Performance

Meanwhile, in Dearborn, the Mustang, the last car in its segment, is enjoying a remarkable month. This success can partly be attributed to the Mustang’s inherent appeal. The latest S650 generation, which debuted for the 2024 model year, offers a traditional and powerful V-8 engine, along with new high-performance versions such as the ultra-exclusive GTD and the formidable Dark Horse. Additionally, the Mustang’s triumph arises from a reduced level of competition.

Decline of Competitors

The Dodge Challenger has ceased production, with the last units manufactured in December of the previous year, leading to a dwindling availability of these models. Stellantis reported moving 11,480 Challengers in August, reflecting an 11 percent decrease. Furthermore, as the Charger Daytona coupe and sedan approach their release, they will not position themselves as direct competitors to the Mustang, as they will only offer turbo I-6 or electric power options.

In addition to this, the Chevrolet Camaro has also been discontinued, with its final production run occurring in December 2023. The absence of these competitors allows the Mustang to capitalize on its unique position in the market. It will be fascinating to observe whether the forthcoming Charger Daytona will impact the Mustang’s market share and to what extent.
