John Boyega’s Top Travel Destinations Worldwide

John Boyega’s Travel Insights

Made famous by the Star Wars films, British-Nigerian actor John Boyega loves city skylines and finding sweets in the minibar, and next appears in an epic historical drama set in West Africa. Here, he shares his travel experiences and favorite destinations.

Where have you just come back from?

“Cape Town. It’s where we filmed The Woman King, and I love its energy; the mix of modern life and this backdrop of nature, with Lion’s Head mountain, Table Mountain, and the ocean. I loved the fact that I could eat oysters and watch the sun set, but I could also enjoy grilled meat and sweet bread with the community in a shanty town; and go parasailing or horse riding in between.”

Where in the world have you felt happiest?

“In Ocho Rios, Jamaica. I’d been to Kingston before, but I wanted somewhere calm and rural to unwind between movies. I was able to kick back and mentally rejuvenate, which was really healing. Give me water and that vitamin D, and I can’t complain.”

Name a place that most lived up to the hype

“Atlanta, especially as a young Black man, as it’s home to a lot of Black-owned businesses, and feels like a real hub of creativity. I loved the vibe – the parties at a spot called Blue, along with all the different types of churches.”

Which is your favourite city?

“Tokyo. It feels like a clash between technology, history, and culture, and it appeals to my nerdy, anime-loving side. I love the weirdness of the things you can do – dressing up as Super Mario characters, or jumping in a go-kart and riding the streets at night. I recall this fascinating local light show that made absolutely no sense, yet everybody enjoys it.”

Which is your road most travelled?

“I find myself visiting Los Angeles frequently, partly for work, but I have a personal life there now, too. Initially, just after I made Attack the Block, I didn’t experience the Hollywood scene and wasn’t truly immersed in it. However, through staying in Inglewood and then Compton, I’ve built friendships that now feel like family. LA is, to a certain extent, a mash-up of worlds – from Malibu to West Hollywood, and then up to Topanga. Each area offers something unique.”

Describe your favourite view

“I adore city skylines. Growing up in a tower block, the skyline represented the only luxurious aspect of my surroundings. I enjoy overlooking a city during the summer when greenery and sunset blend beautifully, but I also cherish views of the ocean in the Caribbean.”

What do you pack first?

“My PlayStation 4. It has to come, no matter where I am. I need to maintain my usual routine, even if I have the option to go for a run on a beautiful beach afterward.”

Describe a childhood holiday memory

“Oh Lord, does it have to be a good one? My family could only afford one holiday, which was to Nigeria. I recall sitting beside my parents on the plane when my mother decided to put on a movie called Baby Boy starring Tyrese Gibson – a story about a young African-American man attempting to turn his life around. There were numerous intimate scenes, and I thought: this isn’t appropriate for a plane where I have no option to leave!”

Where did you go on your first holiday without your parents?

“LA. Once I dropped out of university and decided to pursue acting, I went there to network and follow my dreams. It felt like a coming-of-age journey, trying to find my path with ambition but limited funds.”

Describe a holiday disaster

“I love Nigeria and proudly hold Nigerian citizenship, but my most unfortunate experience was in a place called Songo. One Sunday, while playing outside with other kids after church, I fell into a gutter filled with waste. It was an embarrassing moment, to say the least.”

Tell us about a great little place you know

“Koh Rong island in Cambodia. It offers stunning views, with blue waters and lovely corals, complemented by delightful local restaurants. It remains unspoiled, with locals not competing against restaurant chains, which allows for a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.”

And the smartest hotel you’ve stayed in?

“I stopped staying in hotels years ago due to the overwhelming number of fans, but I do appreciate unique accommodations, especially in the UK when seeking an escape from London. I enjoy modern treehouses and once stayed in an incredible boat-house in Miami.”

Who is the most interesting person you’ve met on your travels?

“I met a Rastaman near a waterfall in the Ochi mountains of Jamaica. Sometimes, speaking to a stranger about personal issues can be incredibly profound. This encounter provided clarity on the world I had left behind, my passion for acting, and my aspirations. It was a magical moment that I cherish.”

What would you most like to find in your minibar?

“Soda and sweets. Just the fun, nostalgic items!”

Nominate your eighth wonder of the world

“Petra. While in Jordan to film Star Wars, I spent some time exploring this incredible location, and seeing it in person amidst the desert was awe-inspiring.”

John Boyega is in “The Woman King,” now available. He spoke to Francesca Babb.
