Embark on a Majestic Safari Experience Through the Eyes of Expert Guide Kitonyi ‘George’ Kamonde
Veteran tour guide Kitonyi “George” Kamonde describes what it’s like to work for one of the world’s leading safari companies.
Ask almost anyone, and they’ll surely tell you that a majestic safari experience is at the top of their travel bucket list. From South Africa to Tanzania, the stunning imagery of seemingly endless green plains, towering giraffes, and the formidable “Big 5” (African leopard, African lion, Cape buffalo, African elephant, and rhinoceros) has captivated adventurers worldwide. However, much like people, not all safari destinations are created equal. Each location offers something unique that speaks to those fortunate enough to indulge in its wonder. This is particularly true for Kenya, where various extraordinary landscapes, such as Amboseli, Lewa, and Masai Mara, are home to rarities like Grevy’s zebra, black rhino, and African wild dog.
When he’s not home in Kenya’s sunny, bustling capital city of Nairobi, Kitonyi Kamonde — better known to adventure-seeking travelers as George — is in the bush serving as an expert guide with one of the world’s best safari outfitters, Micato Safari. For over a decade, George and his warm smile have provided local insights into Kenya’s wildlife to generations of safari-goers, ensuring they experience the adventure of a lifetime. His expertise ranges from recalling historic facts and seeking out rare animals to guiding guests through luxurious accommodations like Elewana’s Kifaru House. George is the guide you want by your side — whether you’re on your first or fiftieth safari.
A New Vision for Safaris: One That Puts African Stories First
Discovering Kenyan Wildlife and Culture
What do you love most about being a guide?
“I love meeting guests who share my passion for the wild, often forming friendships along the way. Each day, I eagerly anticipate educating them about my country, its people, history, culture, and traditions. It’s vital to remember that our guests are here for the wilderness and the animals. Whether it’s a lion or a dung beetle, every sighting offers a unique narrative. I also cherish collaborating with fellow guides, who consistently challenge me with their knowledge. Each day in the bush is different — from a lioness on the hunt to a massive bull elephant bathing in a hippo pool, it’s an unpredictable adventure,” he explains.
Guiding Tips for Aspiring Safari Guides
What advice do you have for others looking to get started as a guide?
“Becoming a safari guide is incredibly rewarding! While we always make time for laughter, there is a wealth of knowledge to acquire. It’s one of the most fulfilling professions, and with diligent preparation, you will thrive in it. A successful guide must possess a broad skill set, a sense of humor, and be equipped with ample information to keep guests informed and entertained. If you’re unsure about something, it’s better to admit it and seek the correct answer,” George advises.
Memorable Wildlife Encounters
What’s your most memorable safari experience?
“Imagine a grand male lion, six feet long and weighing over 400 pounds, engaged in a life-or-death struggle with a pack of hyenas over a wildebeest kill. Upon our arrival, five hyenas were present, but as the news spread, more joined, and soon there were 30. The hyenas surrounded the lion, attempting to seize bites from the kill while the lion fought back fiercely. Eventually, the lion retreated into a nearby marsh for safety, only to be followed by the hyenas. In a surprising twist, the lion’s brother appeared to rescue him from the frenzy. Our guests and I were equally astonished,” recalls George.
Which safari region is your personal favorite, and why?
“The Maasai Mara stands out for its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife. The grandeur of spotting big cats, like leopards and cheetahs, amidst the stunning scenery is truly unparalleled,” he shares.
Timing Your Safari Adventure
What’s the best time to visit Kenya on safari?
“Due to its location on the Equator, Kenya is suitable for year-round visits, although April tends to be the wettest month. Regardless of the season, we strive to create the best safari experiences for our guests,” George advises.
What are three common mistakes you see guests make on their first safari?
“Firstly, overpacking is common. There’s no need for hairdryers, shampoos, or excessive clothing, as Micato provides many essentials. Additionally, guests often bring too many shoes. Since Micato offers complimentary laundry service daily in the bush, travelers can lighten their loads significantly. It’s also advisable for photography enthusiasts to bring a good camera with an appropriate lens for bird and long-distance shots. While smartphones are improving, having the right equipment can maximize your safari experience. Lastly, guests sometimes get overly excited at animal sightings, which can scare shy animals away. With experience, Micato guests quickly learn to maintain a quieter demeanor, especially when tracking elusive leopards,” George explains.
