When 10-year-old Danish Prince Christian was swept out to sea by a rip at Mermaid Beach on Australia’s Gold Coast on Thursday, a Kiwi lifeguard, Nick Malcolm, came to the rescue.
The modest lifesaver hasn’t made a fuss about saving the potential heir to the throne. Surf Lifesaving New Zealand chairman Geoff Hamilton praised Malcolm’s rescue, noting that high-profile rescues like this are beneficial for surf lifesaving as they convey critical water safety messages to the public and encourage more people to engage in lifesaving. “Rescuing the prince is an outstanding achievement, but I’m sure our guys would have rescued anyone who needed their help,” Hamilton stated.
According to Australia’s 7 News, Danish Crown Prince Frederick personally thanked Malcolm for the swift rescue, and the prince returned to the surf the next day.
