Kwaku Yaro: An Artist’s Insight into Accra’s Art Scene
Kwaku Yaro creates stunning mixed-media portraits utilizing cleverly upcycled wax prints, the iconic blue-and-red chequered polypropylene bags commonly found in Ghana, and various urban materials. Based in Accra, this remarkable Ghanaian visual artist celebrates his favorite art markets, beaches, and Afrobeat bars that deeply inspire his work.
Gallery 1957
“I’m part of the African art collective, Artemartis, which has a studio here in Accra. Additionally, I frequently visit Gallery 1957, named to commemorate the year Ghana gained its independence. This dynamic space, located within the Kempinski Hotel, features sleek, earth-toned interiors that exhibit outstanding Ghanaian talent alongside some international artists. Currently, I am their artist in residence, and my exhibition, Look What We Have Seen, invites viewers to engage differently with discarded, everyday packaging materials.”
ADA Contemporary Art Gallery
“ADA Contemporary Art Gallery is another lovely venue to explore. I truly enjoy immersing myself in the vibrant displays created by Ghanaian artists. Additionally, don’t miss Villagio, located just around the corner. These colorful, high-rise luxury apartments are adorned in red, green, and yellow, reflecting the geometric patterns of traditional kente cloth. For a deeper understanding of Ghanaian art history, I recommend visiting the Nubuke Foundation, a modern cultural center built with cubic structures that supports local artists and offers an extensive arts program.”
