Explore the Las Vegas Strip: A 10K Step Walking Adventure

Delve into Local Strolls, where writers reveal their favorite walks in their hometowns. Each route offers a snapshot of urban life, guiding you to lesser-known attractions and cherished local spots. Here, Jesse Scott outlines the best route for exploring Las Vegas’s iconic Strip on foot.

While there is so much more to appreciate about Las Vegas beyond its glitzy, mega-casino-lined Strip, let’s be real here: the Strip is Las Vegas’ main attraction and a total must for newbies and veterans alike. It is constantly evolving—be it imploding classic casinos to make room for new developments or new restaurants and shops celebrating grand openings. Consequently, navigating the Strip becomes an exciting adventure with each visit.

Often jammed with traffic and under construction 24/7, you certainly don’t want to drive it unless you’re passing through for a scenic view or want to crawl at 5 mph to your dinner reservation. Instead, the Strip was made for strolling, with an extensive roadside network of super-wide sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian bridges, and outdoor escalators.

The beauty of a Strip stroll lies in the freedom to pause as desired—whether it’s hitting a blackjack table inside a casino or snagging a yard-long frozen cocktail from one of the convenient bars. However, be mindful that Las Vegas is located in a desert; therefore, bringing water and sunscreen is essential to avoid dehydration and sunburn during the day.

Where to Start: Mandalay Bay

The core of the Strip begins at the golden-windowed Mandalay Bay on the southern end and stretches north to towering Stratosphere, covering approximately 4.3 miles one way. If you wish to shorten your walk, it’s only 2.9 miles to the Wynn from Mandalay Bay—an easy stroll without any stops taking about an hour. Starting your journey at Mandalay, you can visit the acclaimed Shark Reef Aquarium, housing over 2,000 marine creatures in its clear glass tunnel.

The walk: An indoor path connects Mandalay Bay with the neighboring Luxor and medieval-themed Excalibur. Once you’ve reached Excalibur, cross the pedestrian bridge over Tropicana Ave to arrive at New York-New York.

Ride the Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York

This is Vegas, so why not experience a roller coaster ride with a scenic view? The Big Apple Coaster winds through an NYC-styled skyline, offering unique vistas of the MGM Grand across the street, contrasted beautifully against the distant, often snow-capped mountains.

The walk: After enjoying the ride, head down the west side of the Strip, passing T-Mobile Arena, the sumptuous Shops at Crystals, and Aria until you reach the Cosmopolitan.

Stop for Photo Ops and Pizza at the Cosmopolitan

Your Instagram feed won’t be complete without a quirky shot inside the giant black high-heel at the Cosmopolitan. Just off the casino floor, visit the Chandelier Lounge for stunning décor. If you’re feeling hungry, venture to level three in search of the hidden gem, Secret Pizza, serving authentic New York-style slices.

The walk: Continue your journey north, stopping to admire the fountains outside the Bellagio and the Eiffel Tower replica at Paris Las Vegas. At Flamingo Rd, utilize the escalators and crosswalks to navigate to the eastern side of the Strip until you reach Flamingo, located across from Caesars Palace and the Forum Shops.

Watch Flamingos Frolic and Take in a Little Vegas History

Amid Las Vegas’ constant flux of construction and innovation, the Flamingo stands as the oldest on the Strip, established in 1946. After exploring its buzz from the slot machines, head to the free Flamingo Wildlife Habitat on-site, where you’ll find Chilean flamingos and giant koi fish swimming in tranquil ponds.

The walk: Outside the Flamingo’s northern entrance is the pedestrian-only LINQ Promenade. At its eastern end, you’ll discover the High Roller, the largest observation wheel in the U.S. After refreshing yourself at the nearby O’Shea’s, continue on and pass Harrah’s to reach the Venetian Resort.

Coast on a Gondola through the Venetian

The Grand Canal Shoppes inside the Venetian offer gondola rides beneath painted skies and over charming bridges. Opt for an outdoor ride to admire views of the pirate-themed Treasure Island across the street, and enjoy the melodies from your singing gondolier.

The walk: Explore the Venetian and Palazzo until you reach a pedestrian overpass leading to the Wynn. If you have time, take a quick detour to see the biggest LED screen on Earth at the Sphere.

Watch the Lake of Dreams Fountain Show at the Wynn

While many shows on the Strip come with hefty ticket prices, the Lake of Dreams at Wynn offers a stunning free display often overlooked by visitors. This multi-faceted attraction spans three acres and features a breathtaking waterfall and LED light shows—best viewed from Bar Parasol’s outdoor patio.

The walk: If you decide to end your stroll at the Wynn, you can either make your way back south, explore your hotel, or catch a taxi/Uber/Lyft. If energy still remains, head to the North Strip, home to the newest casino-resorts like Resorts World Las Vegas and Fontainebleau Las Vegas.

Bonus Stop: Dine Like a Baller at Fontainebleau Las Vegas

Fontainebleau Las Vegas, the tallest building in Nevada, officially opened in late 2023 with a star-studded celebration featuring Justin Timberlake, Cher, and more. The Miami-inspired venue buzzes with culinary excitement, boasting celebrity-chef restaurants like Komodo and Papi Steak. For a true Vegas indulgence, try the Beef Case at Papi Steak—a stunning presentation of a 55-ounce Wagyu tomahawk steak in a golden briefcase.
