Essential Tips for Exploring Limantour Beach

Limantour Beach Description

Limantour Beach is considered one of the most picturesque beaches at Point Reyes National Seashore. This expansive stretch of sand is accompanied by low cliffs and faces south, providing calm waves that make it ideal for families. Fortunately, there are no entrance or parking fees, allowing visitors to enjoy its vastness without any added costs.

This beautiful beach, which extends for miles, rarely feels crowded due to its size. Additionally, the adjacent saltwater estuary is a birdwatcher’s haven, especially in the fall. In the winter, it’s common to spot ducks in the freshwater ponds that remain from when the area served as a dairy ranch. Nature enthusiasts will also find harbor seals lounging on the beach or bobbing in the surf, adding to the beach’s charm.

Accessing the sand involves a five-minute stroll from a large parking lot, requiring visitors to cross a metal bridge and climb a sand dune.

Facilities near the parking area include restrooms, picnic tables, drinking water, and an outdoor shower; however, no amenities are available directly on the beach.

What Is There to Do at Limantour Beach?

Limantour Beach offers a range of enjoyable activities primarily involving natural surroundings. Some popular options include:

  • Beachcombing
  • Kite flying
  • Whale watching in the spring
  • Walking or running along the shoreline
  • Wading (with caution regarding strong currents)

For those interested in evening activities, bonfires are permitted with a permit obtainable at the Point Reyes National Seashore visitor center. While some surfers may take to the waves when conditions are favorable, most prefer nearby Drakes Beach. Although rare, there have been infrequent reports of shark attacks in this area, so caution is recommended.

Sleeping at Limantour Beach

Camping options within Point Reyes National Seashore are limited to primitive, pack-in sites. If you plan on a longer stay and prefer more amenities, nearby towns like Inverness, Olema, and Point Reyes Station offer various lodging options for visitors.

What You Need to Know Before You Go to Limantour Beach

Limantour Beach falls within a national seashore area, where there are no federal restrictions against public nudity. Consequently, the north end of Limantour Beach has become a popular clothing-optional destination.

Visitors are encouraged to bring all necessary supplies for the day, as the drive to the beach can be lengthy. If planning a bonfire, remember to bring firewood and kindling, as well as protection from the wind—having an umbrella or tent can enhance your comfort.

Dogs are welcome on the southeast end of the beach, although it’s advisable to keep them on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Visitors should refrain from allowing pets in the northwest section of the beach, where they are prohibited to protect the local harbor seals and endangered snowy plovers.

Please also note that restrooms at the beach are of the portable type, so making a pit stop before arrival may be wise.
