Former Bank in London to Become Wetherspoons Pub
A Grade II-listed building, recognized as one of the most beautiful former banks in London, is currently being remodeled into a giant Wetherspoons. Known for its affordable drinks, Wetherspoons serves as a popular chain of pubs across the UK and Ireland. Number 222 Strand was last utilized as an opulent establishment of Lloyds bank but began its journey as an upscale restaurant back in the 19th century.
With intricately tiled walls, elaborate roofs, painted pillars, and even a fountain, this establishment gained acclaim for being London’s most exquisite bank. Consequently, it is now poised to transform into a remarkable and cost-effective pub. The splendid interiors will be preserved (as tiles are easily maintainable) while the ground floor and mezzanine level evolve into an expansive 27,000 square-foot Wetherspoons, boasting a capacity for nearly 600 patrons, as reported by the Evening Standard.
If you are unfamiliar with the Wetherspoons brand, it is noted for several distinctive traits, including:
- Bespoke and often garish carpets in each of the 900 branches
- Lack of music in most locations (for an entertaining atmosphere, head to Cambridge for a full-blown ‘Spoons disco)
- Many establishments are situated in repurposed buildings, showcasing unique architecture and unexpected features
We are eager to discover the carpet pattern they select for what could potentially be the most glamorous Wetherspoons yet.
