In our A Total Trip series, writers document what they spent on a recent getaway. This edition explores the costs of a four-day London escape involving theatre and delightful dining.

Traveling is a passion of mine, and the expenses it incurs often lead to contemplation. However, I embrace the philosophy of seizing the day—no matter how daunting a trip’s price may appear, I indulge and figure out the budget later.

This particular journey took me from New York to London in April to see Paul Mescal perform. His portrayal of Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Phoenix Theatre had received excellent reviews, and I was eager to witness it in person.

Accompanied by three close friends, we decided to stay in Covent Garden. I used my American Express Platinum Card to secure a room at the NoMad London, maximizing benefits such as a $200 credit, room upgrade, and complimentary breakfast.

Pre-trip Spending

Hotel: $1,311 (for four nights at NoMad London). The stay was exceptional. Upon arrival, we enjoyed complimentary champagne and fruit, plus a suite upgrade. The restaurant offered a lovely ambiance and delightful breakfast options ranging from omelets to fresh pastries. The hotel housed a lively bar and a chic lounge area, perfect for relaxing.

On the Ground

Thursday

Transport: I purchased a Paddington Express ticket for $30 upon landing at Heathrow. Although pricier, it was a luxurious travel option that I later learned could be improved with the more affordable Elizabeth Line for future trips.

Dinner: We dined at Sabor, a vibrant Spanish restaurant where we savored various dishes, including delectable croquettes. My share totaled $80.

Total: $113

Friday

Transport: A quick Tube ride cost me $3.75 to reach Highgate. Luggage was a bit challenging, as I underestimated the vast number of stairs.

Lunch: We relished fish and chips at The Flask with drinks included for about $75, and later enjoyed a pint in a sunny courtyard for $7.

Cocktail: At The Savoy Hotel, I splurged on a $32 cocktail while anticipating the theatre visit.

Theatre: The highlight was A Streetcar Named Desire at Phoenix Theatre for $101—it was an astonishing performance that exceeded my expectations.

Total: $231.75

Saturday

Breakfast: We started at Dishoom, a charming Bombay-style café offering endless delights for around $23.

Activity: Enjoying an iced coffee while reveling in the beauty of St. James’s Park was fulfilling, culminating in nearly 20,000 steps that day!

Snacks: Indulged in Negronis and delightful nibbles in an enchanting courtyard for $60.

Total: $87.50

Sunday

Activity: Started with an informative visit to the Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian exhibit at Tate Modern for $25.

Dinner: Concluded our getaway with a fabulous meal at Jacuzzi for around $64.

Total: $89

Airport Transport: I took the Elizabeth Line back to Heathrow for $7 instead of the Paddington Express, a choice I will maintain for future travels.

Final tally (for one): Accommodation ($1,311) + on-the-ground spending ($528.25) = $1,839.25

Observations

Considering various budgets, London caters to every traveler’s needs. Staying in upscale accommodations and dining out can escalate costs, but lower-budget options, such as Airbnb, can offer alternative experiences without compromising on enjoyment. This four-day trip was undoubtedly an investment, but the memories created were invaluable.
