Samuel McKnight MBE is often regarded as the original “session stylist,” credited with curating iconic looks on the covers of the world’s glossiest magazines – with nearly 200 international Vogue covers under his name. Born in Scotland in the 1950s, he relocated to London in the 1970s and later moved to New York in the 80s. Samuel’s clientele includes notable figures such as Princess Diana, Lady Gaga, and Naomi Campbell, yet his love for the English capital remains evident. Here, he shares his favorite places to shop, stay, and explore in his free time.
Restaurants, Pubs, and Bakeries
“I tend to stick to local spots. At the very top end of Portobello Road, there are some fantastic restaurants and cafes, like the Pelican Bar on All Saints Road. It’s a pub with a great menu, featuring dishes like smoked trout with radish or ox heart with celeriac. Further up Portobello Road, Cacciari’s is an intimate Italian restaurant with outdoor seating year-round, known for its delightful breakfasts, pasta, and pizzas. I often visit Bluebelles of Portobello next door to enjoy their Classic salad with my dog.”
“Another great spot is Lowry & Baker, located across Portobello Road. It serves fantastic lunches, including scrumptious scrambled eggs and afternoon scones. Vintage stores on that block add to its charm.”
“While in that area, I highly recommend The Ladbroke Arms gastropub. Tucked away in a residential neighborhood, they offer excellent seasonal food, especially their Sunday roasts served with roast potatoes and gravy, and I can bring my dog inside.”
Shopping
“I enjoy exploring Liberty for homeware, fabrics, and their Christmas decorations department. It’s easy to get lost there! They now have a new perfumery in the basement—a fantastic place for unique scents like Dandelion. Their shop on Crawford Street also offers bespoke fragrances.”
“For clothing, my go-to is Dover Street Market, which began as a Commes des Garçons store but now hosts a variety of upmarket brands with exclusive finds. The top floor features Rose Bakery, where you can unwind with tea and pastries after shopping.”
Green Spaces
“I walk my dog in Gladstone Park in North London. It’s expansive and perfect for letting my dog run free, offering stunning views over west London, including Wembley Stadium and the Shard. The park also features a beautiful flower garden and a lovely café called Stables Café.
“Another favorite is the Queen Mary’s Rose Gardens in Regent’s Park. Just a 15-minute walk from Oxford Street, this hidden gem features 12,000 roses with 85 varieties, providing a peaceful oasis away from the city’s hustle and bustle.”
Places to Stay
“I last visited Claridge’s while working with Sienna Miller. It’s perfect for a luxurious experience, whether for breakfast or afternoon tea. The service is truly exceptional.”
“I also spent time at Ham Yard and Covent Garden Hotel. If you prefer a cozy, modern boutique hotel with great food and service, either of these is a fantastic choice, especially Covent Garden for its proximity to the theater.”
