Introducing Camden Highline: London’s New Elevated Park
London is set to develop its own version of New York City’s High Line, an elevated park and walkway along an abandoned train line. The project aims to transform the disused railway viaduct that connects Camden Town and King’s Cross into a green artery for the city. Designers are invited to participate, with a £10,000 (US$12,895) prize available for winners.
Project Overview
The Camden Highline will span 1.2km and serve as a verdant urban oasis approximately eight meters above ground level. The journey between Camden and King’s Cross is expected to take just ten minutes, offering a unique experience in one of London’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Given that some railway structures have remained idle for over 30 years, revitalizing these spaces will enhance public accessibility.
Community Benefits
Richard Terry, chairman of the Camden Highline, expressed enthusiasm about this venture, stating, ‘We’re thrilled to be taking this next big step towards realizing Camden’s exciting new park in the sky. We need it more than ever now, and I for one can’t wait to enjoy it.’
What to Expect
When opened, the Camden Highline will be free for everyone. Expected features include:
- Cafes
- Art installations
- Seating areas
- Spaces for community activities
While an official opening date is yet to be announced, the project aims to have at least one section operational by 2024, depending on funding and planning permissions.
