Experience Camp Hox: An Eco-Friendly Retreat in Normandy

I’m sipping a raspberry mule in a café in Le Marais, watching beautiful Parisians go by. Nice and easy on the eyes; however, car horns are honking and I’m bathed in the bouquet of cigarette smoke. The freshness of countryside camping beckons, yet I shudder at the prospect of roughing it un-coiffed and without proper toilets. When it comes to urban versus rural, I haven’t figured out how to have my cake and eat it.

Getting to Camp Hox

In less than two hours, the train from Paris Montparnasse delivers me to the golden, wildflower fields of the Le Perche region in southern Normandy. Forward-thinking Parisiens are increasingly migrating here for rustic relief. My taxi cruises down a narrow, tree-lined road and pulls up at the Puits Carré stud farm run by Sabine Guesnet, who raises purebred Spanish horses for dressage competitions.

Accommodations at Camp Hox

I enter my eco-cabin, known as the Parcel Tiny House, on the edge of a quiet field. Wooden and bijou, the structure is powered by a rooftop solar panel as part of Camp Hox’s low-impact sustainability mission. Consequently, I cool off under a ceiling fan before pouring myself a glass of Chandon Garden Spritz and then flopping onto the queen-size bed, which is positioned beneath large, corner windows. The view outside – two Spanish stallions bouncing lithely in the paddock – is magnificent.
