Budget-Friendly Flights to Lyon
From Thursday, January 10, budget-friendly carrier Wizz Air is launching four flights to Lyon a week from its Gatwick hub. Flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, starting at just £21.99 for one-way fares.
Wizz Air’s New Routes
This announcement comes at a time when travelers are seeking ways to satisfy their wanderlust despite the ongoing cost of living crisis. Wizz Air has recently shared several new routes, including twice-weekly flights from London Luton to Łódź and Bydgoszcz in Poland, among others. Destinations include major airports such as Rome Fiumicino and Tel Aviv.
Lyon: A City of Culture
Marion Geoffroy, Managing Director of Wizz Air UK, expressed enthusiasm about the new route, stating, “We are excited to announce the addition of yet another exciting route from Gatwick Airport. Lyon is known for its UNESCO-listed Old Town, impressive architecture, and thriving food scene.”
Proximity to the French Alps
Moreover, Geoffroy highlighted the city’s closeness to the popular ski resorts of the French Alps, set to attract millions of tourists over the 2022/23 season, following a period of quieter slopes due to the pandemic.
A Historical Overview
Located where the Rhône and Saône rivers converge, Lyon’s favorable position caught the attention of the Romans, and settlements began to form in the metropolitan area over 2000 years ago. The arrival of Italian merchants in the late 15th century transformed the city into one of France’s economic powerhouses, which it continues to be today, thanks to renowned banking, chemical, and pharmaceutical companies.
Why Visit Lyon?
Despite its economic significance, the city feels vibrant and welcoming, offering a fabulous alternative to the tourist hordes of the French capital and often-expensive hotels. While Lyon is already well-served by Easyjet and British Airways, along with a direct Eurostar service for those seeking sustainable travel options, the new route opens up further opportunities and budget-friendly competition.
