When you Google the island of St. Barts, you’re immediately drawn in by stunning images of teal water and luxury yachts, nestled among lush mountains and soothing palm trees. Although these photos are captivating, the real-life views from my window were truly unparalleled.

1. Introduction to St. Barts and the Hotel

Arriving at the only five-star hotel in the island’s capital of Gustavia, I sensed the uniqueness of the Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf ngay từ the lobby where the breathtaking views were evident.

“It’s just breathtaking,” said Andrei Mocanu, the hotel’s general manager. “You wonder, ‘Is this place real?’ when you see the harbor, the rocks coming out of the water, and the sunset.”

Opened in October 2020, the Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf is a newly revamped property that had been closed for years. Each of the hotel’s 21 bungalows and suites features a private terrace with spectacular views that encourage travelers to relax and enjoy their surroundings.

2. Two-Bedroom Suite Experience

My two-bedroom suite beautifully blended Caribbean charm with southern French décor, featuring tropical green-printed cushions, white shiplap, and pink accents. The luxurious marble bathroom opened up to a postcard-perfect view of the port of Gustavia.

Awakening the next morning, I indulged in a basket of fresh, flaky croissants alongside a double cappuccino, as I relaxed on the yellow and white-striped settee on the balcony. Palm trees gently swayed in the warm breeze, providing a welcoming atmosphere. A short walk took me to Shell Beach, a quaint stretch of sand adorned with tiny shells and soft daybeds accessible to hotel guests. After a refreshing swim and a flavorful snack at Shellona, the hotel’s beachfront restaurant, I lounged and watched the sun sink below the horizon.

3. Culinary Delights at the Hotel

For travelers delighting in the French Caribbean ambiance, the hotel was offering a complimentary night for guests who stay a minimum of four nights until June 30.

There’s truly no bad view in St. Barts. The breathtaking experience begins the moment you descend in a small commuter plane, navigating over dense green peaks and deep blue waters. The convenience of being close to town eliminates the need for a car, enhancing the experience.

“Our guests, they love the immersion into the culture… meeting locals—you can see the fishermen pulling in their catch, making for a more authentic experience,” noted the general manager, expressing pride in the stunning views.

4. Immersing in Local Culture

Locals fondly joke that St. Barts is a fragment of land that broke away from the south of France and drifted into the Caribbean. Walking through Gustavia, visitors quickly understand why this comparison is often made.

The next day, I wandered down into town along the waterfront, exploring Rue de la Republique, featuring top French designers such as Hermes, Dior, Cartier, and Louis Vuitton. The island also boasts charming boutiques like Pop Saint Barth, showcasing flowing dresses and rattan clutches, alongside Sunday, a trendy establishment from Saint-Tropez, featuring chic beach cover-ups.

5. Final Reflections and Departure

For my final evening in paradise, I enjoyed dinner at Le Fouquet’s, an outdoor brasserie at the top of Le Carl Gustaf, where I savored classic French cuisine. Sipping a tangy cocktail embellished with edible perfume, I indulged in rich potato gnocchi with truffle cream, complemented by thinly shaved black truffles, while relishing the Caribbean ambiance.

On my final morning in this stunning locale, I enjoyed a breakfast of freshly-baked pastries on my room’s balcony as I packed for departure. Taking one last glance at the harbor and town below, I was entranced by the vibrant blue waters and deep green mountains. It was clear that no matter how many photos I had taken, none could capture the full beauty of this enchanting destination.
