Fairmont El San Juan Hotel Overview
After a seamless travel experience from New York City—complete with no customs lines and no jet lag—I arrived in the coastal city of San Juan, Puerto Rico’s most popular destination. Staying at the iconic Fairmont El San Juan Hotel, located on Isla Verde Beach, provided immediate access to the vibrant cobblestone streets and colorful colonial buildings of Old San Juan. This property perfectly balances lively urban vibes with peaceful ocean views.
Accommodation Experience
Opened in 1958, the hotel has transformed into a sought-after spot for affluent travelers and entertainers since the 1960s. With its captivating grounds featuring four pools, luxury cabanas, poolside villas, and a full-service spa, the allure is evident. My accommodation, the Banyan Villa, was named after the property’s 300-year-old banyan tree. This spacious room—approximately 350 square feet—offered a private terrace just steps away from the pools and vibrant gardens, complemented by a cozy hammock for relaxation.
Dining Options
The stunning design continues in the hotel lobby, which serves as the hub of nightlife. Guests can sip cocktails beneath a stunning hand-blown crystal chandelier and enjoy various entertainment options. One standout venue is the Chico Cabaret, a charming speakeasy that hosts burlesque performances during weekend evenings.
Restaurants on the property ensure ample dining choices, with eight venues serving diverse cuisines. My personal favorite was Caña by Juliana Gonzalez, renowned for traditional culinary delights such as camarones al ajillo (garlicky shrimp) and mofongo, making every meal a pleasure.
Exploring Beyond the Resort
Beyond the luxurious resort, Puerto Rico offers a wealth of attractions for every type of traveler. On my first full day, I joined a catamaran tour under the clear blue skies, which led us to Culebra, a small island known for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. Sitting on the sand with a piña colada in hand, I couldn’t imagine a better way to relax.
The next day included an engaging walking tour through Old San Juan that featured visits to five acclaimed dining spots. While indulging in locally grown coffee and savoring Puerto Rican-style dishes, I delved into the rich history of this charming area. This culinary adventure perfectly complemented my exploration, providing a delightful mix of flavors and stories throughout my trip.
