The government of Tanzania has been accused of breaking its commitment to protect the ancestral lands of 40,000 Maasai. Moreover, the pastoralist community has now been instructed to vacate their traditional territory, which borders the Serengeti National Park, for its conversion into a hunting reserve for the royal family of Dubai to pursue big game. Activists had previously celebrated when Tanzania publicly rejected a similar proposal last year; however, the deal now seems to be back in play.

Consequently, Maasai representatives are scheduled to meet with the prime minister on Tuesday to voice their discontent. Unlike the situation in 2013, compensation is being proposed, but the 1 billion shillings (£369,350) will not be directly allocated to those affected; instead, it will be funneled into socio-economic development initiatives.
