Recent Discoveries in Mammoth Cave

A dedicated team of researchers has recently unveiled eight previously unknown miles of underground passages in Mammoth Cave, which holds the title of the world’s longest known cave system. This remarkable discovery, led by the Cave Research Foundation, has expanded the total explored passages within the cave to an impressive 420 miles.

“When it comes to discoveries in Mammoth Cave, there truly is no end in sight!” the National Park Service (NPS) enthusiastically tweeted.

The Role of Volunteers

Every year, volunteers from the Cave Research Foundation journey into the park to meticulously map newly discovered passages. Their primary goal is to locate potential research sites and assist in park management. This intricate process requires dedicated volunteers from the cartographic program, who navigate through the shadowy and abstract subterranean landscape using compasses, measuring tapes, and range finders to reveal new passages.

Although the newly discovered passages remain inaccessible to visitors, there are still various tours available in the five-level cave system. Noteworthy trails, such as the Grand Avenue route, have recently undergone significant upgrades, featuring new benches, handrails, and improved pathways for enhanced visitor experience.

Mammoth Cave, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is conveniently located approximately 90 miles from both Louisville, Kentucky, and Nashville, Tennessee.
