Maserati MC20: The New Era of Super Sports Cars
Maserati’s super sports car, the mid-engined 2021 MC20, is slated to begin production by early July, as per the recent announcements from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Mike Manley. This timing marks a pivotal moment for Maserati as it continues to enhance its future product plans, which remain intact despite previous hurdles.
The MC20 is a two-seat sports car designed to compete with notable models such as the Ferrari F8 Tributo and Lamborghini Huracan. Originally expected to debut in May, the unveiling of the MC20 has been postponed until September. This vehicle draws inspiration from the acclaimed Alfieri concept, leading to heightened anticipation among automotive enthusiasts.
Plans for the MC20’s production remain on track. Following the coupe, a convertible version is anticipated in 2021. The MC20 will feature an innovative twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, distinct from those utilized in Ferrari models. In the coming years, Maserati intends to introduce both gasoline-electric hybrid and battery-electric powertrain options, expanding the model line significantly.
FCA emphasizes that the MC20 represents the natural evolution of the MC12, which marked Maserati’s return to racing in 2004 after a 37-year hiatus. Moreover, Maserati aims to reestablish its presence in motorsport with the new MC20.
Why Is It Called MC20?
The “MC” in MC20 stands for Maserati Corse (Maserati Racing), while the “20” signifies the year 2020, a landmark year indicating the start of a new chapter for Maserati. Developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab, the MC20 will be manufactured at the brand’s historic plant in Modena, Italy. To support this state-of-the-art vehicle, Maserati is retooling the Modena plant, including the addition of a new paint shop.
Are Maserati’s Product Plans Changing?
Mike Manley has acknowledged that Maserati is facing challenges following a tough 2019. However, he affirmed that there have been no delays in Maserati’s product plans. The brand is working diligently to revamp its portfolio by 2023, and although a briefing outlining its future efforts has been postponed, development on future models is progressing smoothly.
Upcoming Models: Baby Levante?
In an exciting development, Maserati plans to introduce a second SUV that will fit below the Levante in its lineup. To facilitate this, FCA is establishing a new production line at its Cassino plant in Italy, which will also manufacture Alfa Romeo vehicles.
Maserati is also set to integrate electric motors into its upcoming models, beginning with the Ghibli hybrid. By 2021, the Italian carmaker will launch successors to the GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible, marking the debut of Maserati’s all-electric vehicles. Both models will be produced at Italy’s Mirafiori plant, which will become a hub for the brand’s electrified offerings.
Additionally, an electric variant of the Levante will enter the market to compete with models like the Tesla Model X. The brand plans to offer a plug-in hybrid version of its midsize crossover and continue electrification across its flagship Quattroporte sedan, while still providing traditional internal combustion engine options.
