5. Fun Facts about Pineapples

Pineapple is one of the iconic symbols of Hawaii. In the late 1940s, Hawaii stood as the pinnacle of pineapple production, accounting for over 80% of the global supply. While the island had an overwhelming dominance in the pineapple industry back then, the landscape has now changed significantly.

Currently, Hawaii contributes to less than 2% of the world’s pineapple crop, with countries like Thailand, the Philippines, and Brazil leading global production. The shift is largely due to cost-effectiveness in growing and canning pineapples elsewhere.

Maui Pineapple Tours offers a unique opportunity for visitors to intimately engage with Hawaii’s favorite fruit. Attendees participate in harvesting tours, taste pineapple at various ripeness levels, and explore the packing facility. Moreover, there’s an option to visit a distillery that uses Maui Gold for spirit production.

Unique Characteristics of Maui Gold Pineapple

Maui Gold Pineapple is celebrated for its natural sweetness, low acidity, and rich golden hue. Additionally, it emits a delectable aroma that enhances its appeal. Notably, Maui Gold boasts three times the Vitamin C found in standard pineapple varieties. This exceptional variety was first introduced by the Maui Pineapple Company in 1996.
