When it comes to camper vans, bigger isn’t always better, especially for those always on the move through tight city streets. In Europe, Volkswagen is launching the Caddy-based California compact camper, which cleverly utilizes its space and offers a fold-out tent to extend the living area even further.

Innovative Interior Design

The main feature of the cabin is a 6.5-by-3.5-foot bed that comfortably fits above the folded seats. When not in use, this bed conveniently folds into the cargo bay, allowing for more storage space. Furthermore, a panoramic roof enhances the experience of sleeping under the stars, while dimmable LED lights create a cozy atmosphere. Privacy curtains, secured by magnets integrated into the fabric, provide the necessary seclusion. Additional storage bags are available on the rear side windows for lightweight items.

Functional Kitchen Space

Upon opening the rear hatch, travelers will find a practical kitchen located beneath the bed area. A pull-out cupboard contains:

• A tray for utensils

This kitchen setup designates the Caddy California as a motorhome, ensuring that essential cooking needs are easily accessible while on the road.

Outdoor Connectivity

Volkswagen has also developed the “California on Tour” app, which provides drivers with information on local campsites, waste disposal stations, and recreational activities. This feature enhances the travel experience, making it easier to connect with nature.

Accommodations for Extra Guests

While the interior is designed for two, an optional tent allows for two additional campers to sleep comfortably. This tent attaches to the rear hatch and includes windows that can be opened during the day to bring in natural light. Importantly, the tent can also be utilized freestanding, independent of the Caddy.

Performance Overview

While comfort is prioritized, the power of the Caddy California may not meet everyone’s expectations. It can be equipped with one of two diesel engines: one delivering 74 horsepower and the other producing 121 horsepower. Buyers have the choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. Additionally, like many modern Volkswagen models, the camper van is built on the brand’s MQB architecture.

Availability

The standard model is set to launch before the end of the year in Europe, with a long-wheelbase version expected next year, extending the van’s length from 14.8 feet to 15.9 feet. While it is unlikely to be available in the U.S., enthusiasts can certainly dream of the possibilities.
