Grand National Roadster Show: A Celebration of Automotive Excellence
On Wednesday, just prior to the 2020 Grand National Roadster Show, the Pomona Fairplex began to come alive. The roadsters competing for America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) were already set up in Building 4, eager to impress the judges. Meanwhile, in Building 6, initial judging for the Al Slonaker Memorial Award was also in full swing. Most other fairground buildings, however, remained empty, dark, and silent.
Thursday marked the transition from quiet preparation to bustling excitement, as hundreds of street rods, customs, race cars, classic trucks, lowriders, and street machines rolled in from all corners of the world. Owners and build teams executed intricate setups, rolling out carpets, erecting stanchions, and organizing displays. By the time the gates opened on Friday, the Grand National Roadster Show was primed for three thrilling days of automotive spectacle, and we absorbed every moment.
Indoor Exhibitions and Displays
The majority of the GNRS event unfolded indoors across seven distinct buildings. The main building housed the AMBR contestants alongside elite-level vehicles, the main stage, the Pinstripers’ Charity Auction, and numerous displays from rod shops and manufacturers. Building 6 showcased Slonaker Award vehicles amid other stunning rides. Building 9 celebrated “Drag Racing Then & Now,” while Building 10 was transformed into the Suede Palace, a haven for retro-styled rods and customs. Additionally, the areas between the buildings hosted Drive-In participants—any rodders eager to showcase their vehicles on Saturday and Sunday.
A Fitting Conclusion
As Sunday evening arrived, the event reached its conclusion. Shortly after the announcement and presentation of over 200 awards, photographers and fans gathered for a last glimpse of Monty Belsham’s award-winning 1932 Ford highboy roadster, crafted by Squeeg’s Kustoms. Nearby, attendees were captivated by Ron Ernsberger’s 1936 Willys pickup, the recipient of the Slonaker Award. As participants dismantled their displays and spectators made their way to the parking lot, the atmosphere transformed from vibrant celebration to a hushed departure. Although the venue appeared empty upon our exit, the memories—and these captivating images—of the 71st Annual Grand National Roadster Show endure.
