Mercedes-Benz’s compact CLA-Class and GLA-Class models are entering the gasoline-electric hybrid segment with their innovative 250e trims. These vehicles share an impressive powertrain, which includes a 158-hp turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 101-hp electric motor. This synergy not only enhances performance but also provides a seamless driving experience, with combined output reaching a peak of 215 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. The power is transmitted to the wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, ensuring smooth shifts and responsive acceleration.

Performance Metrics

The CLA250e sedan (also referred to as a four-door coupe) and the wagon variant (Shooting Brake) can reach 62 mph in just 6.8 seconds, while the GLA250e crossover SUV achieves this in 6.9 seconds. The vehicles are powered by a robust 15.6-kWh battery pack, weighing 331 pounds, which is conveniently located under the rear seats. Notably, Mercedes claims that this arrangement contributes to a minimal reduction in trunk capacity, making these hybrids practical for everyday use.

Electric Range Capability

When fully charged, the electric motor allows the CLA to travel up to 43 miles (42 miles for the Shooting Brake variant) and the GLA can reach a maximum of 38 miles—as reported under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure. However, these range figures are likely lower under the more conservative testing cycles used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which is something potential buyers should consider.

Availability and Alternatives

Unfortunately, there are currently no plans for Mercedes to introduce the CLA250e or GLA250e to the United States market. American consumers who seek a more economical driving option will need to look at the standard 221-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines in the non-hybrid CLA250 and GLA250 models. Moreover, there are also AMG 35 and 45 variants available for those looking for a sportier edge.
