Explore Mexico City with Luisa Salas
Mexico City-based Luisa Salas, known on Instagram as @holalou, is a graphic artist and muralist whose bold minimalism resonates with the rich energy of Mexico City’s art scene. This city is a tapestry of colorful design, vibrant fashion, acclaimed galleries, and historical architecture. Originally from Durango, Salas relocated from the Yucatan Peninsula to Mexico City two years ago to connect with its dynamic art community. Recently, she celebrated career milestones, including a significant residency with Nike and a collaboration with Spotify, which she describes as, “pretty wild.”
Your Ideal Weekend in Mexico City
In the whirlwind of her busy life, Salas carves out special days for herself. Here is how she likes to spend her weekends, discovering the must-try food and exploring the rich artistic offerings of the city.
Street Food and Art in Roma Norte
On Saturday mornings, as a vegetarian, Salas turns to street food for breakfast. Savory, toasted quesadillas are her go-to choice, readily available from street vendors across the city.
“That’s something you can’t miss,” she emphasizes. “They are an excellent way to sample veggies that you might not be familiar with.”
Consider trying huitlacoche, a unique jet-black corn fungus, or squash flowers filled with stringy Oaxacan cheese. Jenny’s Quesadillas, a popular stop in Roma Norte, is a fantastic place to indulge in these treats.
Engaging with Local Art
After breakfast, Salas suggests visiting MOONI Gallery, also located in Roma Norte, to discover emerging Latin American artists whose pieces cater to various budgets. “Instead of being a gallery with bare walls and a couple of paintings, they have like, 2,000 paintings,” she shares. The atmosphere is relaxed, bursting with local art that truly represents the city’s creative spirit.
