The Underline: Miami’s New Urban Park
The first section of The Underline, a long-awaited 10-mile linear park in Miami, is opening on November 16. This innovative walkway is designed by the same firm that oversaw New York City’s now-famous High Line, transforming the spaces below Miami’s Metrorail system into a vibrant destination for urban hikers and art lovers.
Brickell Backyard: A Multitude of Offerings
Consequently, the first phase to open is the Brickell Backyard, a half-mile long segment running from the Miami River to SW 13th St. This impressive area will feature a sound stage, basketball court, outdoor gym, butterfly garden, gaming tables for checkers and chess, and captivating art installations. Moreover, a 50-foot dining table, capable of seating 50 people, has been established. However, space will be limited during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic to adhere to distancing rules. The landscape will be adorned with native vegetation, enhancing the natural aesthetic.
Emphasis on Community and Nature
Brickell Backyard, the northernmost section of The Underline, offers ample space for walkers and cyclists, and hosts activities such as yoga classes, movie screenings, and concerts. Although this area represents only about 5% of The Underline’s total distance, the completed project will span 120 acres across 10 miles, which is anticipated to take a minimum of five years. The Underline will stretch between the Miami River and Dadeland South Station, consequently providing much-needed green space for city dwellers.
Global Inspirations for Urban Renewal
Worldwide, cities are rejuvenating neglected spaces, mirroring Miami’s initiative. For instance, Chicago boasts the 606 elevated path along an old train track, while Seoul features the Skygarden that transformed a 1970s highway slated for demolition. Additionally, London has called for designers to help develop the Camden Highline, offering a £10,000 prize for innovative concepts.
