Recent Travels: Costa Rica
Recently, I traveled to Costa Rica with my daughter, exploring the lush rainforests of the northern volcanic region. Interestingly, I found myself appreciating the rain during our holiday. Everything seemed to come alive, showcasing vibrant colors and a diverse range of birdlife. Afterwards, we ventured to the Pacific coast, where the beautiful beaches and inviting sunshine were simply amazing. The fresh fish and exquisite oysters only added to the delightful experience.
Experiencing Machu Picchu
One destination that truly lived up to the hype is Machu Picchu. The vertical landscapes are extraordinary, presenting a mesmerizing view of a city nestled amidst soaring cliffs that drop 1,000 meters to the river below. It’s hard to fathom how such a remarkable structure was built in such a challenging location, all while now serving as a peaceful habitat for llamas that occasionally express their discontent by spitting!
Favorite Cities
Istanbul ranks high on my list of favorite cities, with its rich history and the unique blend of two continents. Its charming back streets, bustling small businesses, and vibrant atmosphere make it truly captivating. Moreover, New York offers a visual spectacle that is unlike any other place in the world, reminiscent of the stunning beauty found at Machu Picchu.
Memories from Childhood Holidays
I fondly recall childhood holidays by the sea, particularly the North Sea, which we affectionately referred to as “the ocean.” Growing up in Sheffield, the experience of visiting coastal areas, especially Sheringham on the Norfolk coast, was extraordinary. The salty air and fresh seafood were a stark contrast to our industrial surroundings, making Norfolk our personal paradise.
Travel Preferences: Sightseeing Over Sunbathing
As a younger traveler, I often sunbathed to keep a tan. While working on the Life of Brian script in Barbados, soaking up the sun was essential. However, I’ve since changed my viewpoint; I now prefer to walk around and explore or relax in the shade rather than risk sunburn.
Memorable Travel Mishaps
One of my most memorable travel misadventures occurred in 1978 when we stayed at a hotel called Gleneagles in Torquay. Our experience was far from pleasant, as we encountered a particularly rude staff member. Needing breakfast for our early filming schedule, we were met with disbelief when we requested it at 7 a.m. The treatment reminded me of a scene straight out of Fawlty Towers, leading us to leave after just one night.
Inspiring Encounters
Among the most interesting individuals I’ve met during my travels is the Dalai Lama. His presence commands respect, and I was captivated by the way he interacted with pilgrims who sought his blessings. During an interview, his warm demeanor and attentiveness to our crew stood out, making the experience unforgettable.
A Unique Accommodation Experience
While filming Around The World in 80 Days, I embarked on a dhow from Dubai to Mumbai. With no facilities onboard and a slow pace, I initially imagined this would be a challenging experience. However, it turned out to be an extraordinary adventure, as we shared meals with friendly Gujarati fishermen, fostering a sense of community that stays with me even today. While the Taj Hotel in Mumbai was impressive, the dhow journey remains a cherished memory due to its intimacy and shared experiences.
Finding Joy in Unexpected Places
My happiest moments often arise following challenging experiences. After a difficult journey up the Amazon, I found immense joy in arriving in Bogotá, Colombia. While not known for its beauty, the city offered the comforts of bookstores and coffee shops, making it feel like paradise after a taxing adventure.
Exploring Local Cuisine in Nigeria
During my recent travels in Nigeria, I decided to try the enormous local snails, which were surprisingly substantial—almost like small steaks! Although we weren’t filming at the time, I later recounted this unique culinary experience to David Attenborough. These giant land snails have left a lasting impression, highlighting the incredible diversity of culinary traditions around the world.
