Summary
Milwaukee’s RiverWalk Overview
Milwaukee’s RiverWalk is a captivating three-mile pedestrian walkway and river trail, extending from the south end of Riverwest to the beautiful lakefront along the Milwaukee River. This development has taken shape over the years, with the majority of the RiverWalk spanning both sides of the Milwaukee River. Notably, the RiverWalk has been instrumental in revitalizing Milwaukee’s downtown, transforming it from an industrial corridor into a vibrant hub for recreation, nightlife, arts, and dining.
The most iconic section of the RiverWalk is the downtown stretch, which was the first to be constructed following the formalization of the RiverWalk initiative in the early 1990s. This area now serves as a popular gathering point. However, extending to the north and south are the Beerline B and Third Ward RiverWalks, which are being developed in phases as planning and funding allow. The Beerline B section stretches from North Avenue to Pleasant Street, while the downtown section runs from Pleasant Street to Clybourn Street, and the Third Ward section connects Clybourn Street to the lakefront.
Art Installations Along the RiverWalk
Throughout the RiverWalk, visitors can enjoy numerous art installations, including a striking steel ring adorned with bowling ball “bling,” designed by artist John Ready (situated at Mason Street). Another highlight is Acqua Grylli by Beth Sahagian, a formidable mermaid and river guardian, located between Wells and Kilbourn. Furthermore, fans of popular culture will appreciate the Bronze Fonz, a statue of the iconic character from Happy Days, which was installed in 2008 and has become a favorite photo opportunity for visitors.
