André Fu, known for his work on The Upper House in Hong Kong, collaborated with Japanese architect Akira Kuryu to create an atmosphere that is both serene and infused with traditional Kyoto elements. One can admire crafted touches such as an abstract ceramic sculpture in the lobby and a walkway adorned with countless wooden arches, echoing the city’s famed gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine.

The Backstory

The ornate wooden gateway that guests pass through upon arrival hints at the hotel’s rich history. This gateway once marked the entrance to the Kyoto residence of the Mitsui clan, notable figures in Japan who established numerous powerhouse corporations. Interestingly, the land fell out of Mitsui hands in 1945, but in a fortunate twist of fate, it was repurchased by their real estate company in 2015, paving the way for its transformation into the Mitsui hotel flagship.
