The owner of a Montreal pub has received a letter from Quebec’s French-language watchdog reprimanding him for displaying an English-only TripAdvisor sticker in his window. This incident highlights the ongoing issues surrounding language compliance in Quebec, where the promotion of the French language is paramount.
Quebec’s language laws establish French as the official language of the province. Consequently, these laws require commercial signage to predominantly display French. The sticker in question at the Burgundy Lion Pub indicates in English that the business has received positive reviews from TripAdvisor users. Furthermore, a spokesperson from the Office Quebecois de la Langue Francaise (OQLF) clarified that the letters sent to other establishments served merely as reminders that TripAdvisor stickers are also available in French.
