Transforming Dreams into Reality: Relocating to France
Moving overseas can be a daunting yet fulfilling experience, as was the case for Deirdre McGlone and her husband, Marc, who relocated from Ireland to the charming Lot region in southwest France. In this article, we explore their remarkable journey of reinventing their lives and embracing a new lifestyle.
The Allure of a New Life
Many individuals dream of relocating to another country, lured by the promise of exquisite cuisine, pleasant weather, and a more relaxed lifestyle. However, few take the plunge. Deirdre’s path began on a cold February night in 2020, when she and Marc, nestled by their fireplace in Donegal, Ireland, stumbled upon a video of a centuries-old mill in France.
“It was the video that kept coming up in our random search – as though the property was looking for us,” remembers Deirdre. Encouraged by the stunning visuals, they soon became the proud owners of Le Moulin sur Célè.
Making the Leap
The couple’s decision to move felt almost instinctive. Deirdre reflects, “I think the lightbulb moment was when we instantly felt that this could be both our new home and the beginning of a new project, a new chapter.” This realization transformed their dream of relocating to France into a tangible goal.
Both Deirdre and Marc had a rich background in hospitality, having owned a hotel in Donegal for 30 years. They were eager for a fresh start. “We always hoped to find a small property in France where we could continue our passion for hospitality and tourism,” Deirdre shares.
Why France?
Their loving relationship with France blossomed over years of vacations there. The relaxed lifestyle, profound appreciation for quality food, fine wine, and the poetic nature of the French language played significant roles in their attraction to the country. Deirdre, who is continually enhancing her language skills, admits to sometimes experiencing a “French Freeze,” where the words just don’t flow.
Another compelling factor in their decision was the weather. “Here, winters are mild, springs and autumns are generally warm, and summers are hot,” she explains. Additionally, the couple enjoys outdoor dining throughout much of the year, fostering a closer connection with nature.
Restoration of Le Moulin sur Célè
Le Moulin sur Célè, steeped in history and charm, dates back over 260 years. With the main house built in 1880, it showcases traditional rural Lot heritage, featuring stone walls, oak beams, and a picturesque dovecote tower.
Deirdre and Marc engaged local artisans to restore the property’s original features. Today, this luxury rental villa is a favorite among families and cycling groups, providing an ideal base for exploring the enchanting Lot region.
The culinary delights of the region, including Quercy lamb, foie gras, and truffles, further enhance the appeal of their guesthouse. The area’s relatively low tourist traffic allows visitors to enjoy clean air, scenic views, and star-filled night skies.
A New Chapter
Deirdre and Marc live in a cozy cottage on the grounds, providing ample space for their three children, who are pursuing studies across Europe. They express their love for France and the lifestyle it offers.
“Our project at Le Moulin has been like a fresh start; it allows us to stay busy yet not overwhelmed. Our new motto is ‘Pleasure, not pressure’,” Deirdre concludes.
Conclusion
The journey of relocating to France and establishing a guesthouse illustrates the beautiful possibilities that can arise when one takes a leap of faith. Deirdre and Marc’s story is a testament to the power of dreams, resilience, and the endless allure of a life well-lived abroad.
