If there is one destination that deserves a spot on your travel bucket list, it’s Egypt. This incredible country holds a special significance for us as it marked the beginning of our adventures at iBestTravel in 2008 when we initiated our cycling journey from Cairo to Cape Town. Since then, our passion for travel has continued to flourish, interrupted only by the pandemic.

With travel opportunities re-emerging, we are filled with the same excitement that we experienced during our first major journey in 2008. To help you uncover the magic of this ancient land, we’ve compiled a list of the best things to do in Egypt. Ready to draw some travel inspiration?

1. Marvel at the Pyramids of Giza

Constructed between 2550 to 2490 BC by three Pharaohs, the Pyramids of Giza stand as the solitary surviving structure from the original 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Adjacent to the pyramids, you will find the Sphinx, a majestic figure carved from stone. A visit to the Pyramids of Giza is essential when in Cairo, allowing you to enter the Great Pyramid and enjoy activities such as camel rides and visits to the Solar Boat Museum. Don’t miss out on capturing a photograph of this iconic site.

Having visited the pyramids three times, we can affirm that each encounter is just as thrilling as the inaugural one. Guided tours are available to experience a camel and quad adventure across the surrounding desert.

2. Explore Cairo

Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, is rich in historic architecture and cultural heritage. Explore the enchanting historic district where you can find numerous fortifications, tombs, and mosques. As the world’s oldest Islamic city, Cairo’s highlights include visiting the synagogue and the first mosque ever constructed. Key sites worth discovering include the Church of St. Sergius and the Mosque of Amr Ibn al-As. Don’t forget to shop at Kahn El Khalili Bazaar for an authentic experience.

3. Cruise the Nile River

Cruising along the Nile provides the opportunity to uncover majestic temples, ancient ruins, tombs, and historical monuments. Various cruises are available, including Lake Nasser Cruises, Long Nile Cruises, Nile Steamer Cruises, and Luxor Nile Cruises. Don’t forget to visit the Valley of the Kings and Luxor Temple, which are among the top experiences in Egypt. For a unique perspective, enjoy a short ride on smaller wooden boats known as Feluccas.

We have had diverse experiences on the Nile, from sailing to cycling. We strongly recommend taking a Nile River Cruise to Aswan. Relive the adventures of the Pharaohs while navigating the river from Luxor to Aswan, stopping to explore the temples of Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, Abu Simbel, and enjoy a horse carriage ride to visit the Temples of Edfu Horus.

4. Abu Simbel

Situated in Aswan, Abu Simbel was originally located on the Nile River but was relocated in the 1960s due to the construction of the Aswan Dam. This monumental site features four massive statues standing guard over Lake Nassar, near the Sudan border. Dating back to around 1265 BC, these 20-meter statues symbolizing Ramesses II are an unmissable sight. Although we viewed Abu Simbel while traveling to Sudan, day trips are available from Aswan and Cairo.

5. Get to Know Egypt’s History at an Egyptian Museum

The Egyptian Museum, located in Cairo, is home to the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts. A visit typically takes about two hours, focusing on must-see exhibits such as the treasures of Tutankhamun and the Royal Mummies. This museum is one of the best places for those wanting to deepen their knowledge of Egypt’s rich history through ancient art and artifacts.

6. See the Tombs of the Nobles

To gain insight into ancient Egyptian life, visiting the Tombs of the Nobles is highly recommended. This burial site includes over 400 tombs belonging to Egypt’s elite. The paintings within these tombs provide a glimpse into daily life in ancient Egypt. Notable tombs include that of Khonson and the Tomb of Mennan, showcasing vibrant artistry worthy of exploration.

7. Visit the Temple Ramesseum

Situated in Luxor, the Ramesseum was constructed by Ramses II and is renowned for being one of Egypt’s largest mortuary temples. Although it is not fully preserved, it remains a critical historical site. Within the temple, you can view the 57-foot statue of Ramses, dedicated to both the deceased king and the god Amon.

8. Step Inside the Pyramids in Dahshur

Dahshur is where the Egyptians perfected their pyramid-building techniques. This location allows for an immersive experience as you explore the interiors of the pyramids, descending through steep tunnels to view the ancient chambers of the Red Pyramid. Many visitors might find this experience more captivating than visiting the Pyramids of Giza. The Bent Pyramid here is considered the first attempt at constructing a smooth-sided pyramid, which the Egyptians eventually refined with the Red Pyramid.

Located 40 km outside of Cairo, a private driver or organized tour is the best way to reach the Pyramids of Dahshur.

9. Visit Sharm El-Sheikh

If you’re looking for a break from Egypt’s rich history, the beach resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh offers a perfect retreat. Relax on the expansive beaches while reflecting on your travels.

This coastal town is also a prime destination for diving enthusiasts. Don’t miss a chance to explore the marine beauty at Ras Mohammed National Park, one of the world’s renowned diving sites. Additionally, windsurfing opportunities await in Dahab, located on the Sinai Peninsula.

10. Go Scuba Diving

Egypt boasts some of the best diving and snorkeling experiences, particularly around the Red Sea. For something unique, consider diving off the coast of Alexandria to uncover remnants of its fascinating ancient history. Notably, the remains of the Lighthouse of Alexandria and Cleopatra’s sunken palace are captivating dive sites.

11. Explore the Valley of the Kings

Recognized as one of the most significant archaeological sites globally, the Valley of the Kings is renowned for its royal burial ground. While there are over 60 tombs in total, not all are accessible to the public. A comprehensive 3-day tour encompasses visits to the Valley of the Kings, including Hatshepsut Temple, Edfu, Kom Ombo temples, Karnak Temple, and Abu Simbel.

12. Visit the Valley of the Queens

In addition to the royal tombs, a trip to the Valley of the Queens, the resting place of the wives of prominent pharaohs, is essential. Although less extravagant than the Valley of the Kings, it holds its unique charm and significance.

Among its notable tombs is that of Queen Nefertari, renowned for its vibrant artistry and historical importance—an absolute must-see in the area.

13. Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut

Queen Hatshepsut ruled Egypt for 27 years, and her impressive mortuary temple, carved into the cliffs at Deir el-Bahri on the western bank of Luxor, reflects her grandeur. Constructed between 1490-1460 BC, it stands as one of Egypt’s most significant temples.

14. Hike Mount Sinai

Mount Sinai is pivotal to many historical narratives, including that of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments. This sacred site is ideal for hikers and offers picturesque views. The best route to the summit begins at Saint Catherine’s Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a moderate hike lasting about 4 miles, culminating at sunrise.

15. St. Catherine’s Monastery

Located at the base of Mount Sinai, St. Catherine’s Monastery is the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monastery, originally named after Catherine of Alexandria. This revered site is thought to be where God addressed Moses through the burning bush.

16. Learn How Mummification Works

Egypt’s storied history is incomplete without a visit to the Mummification Museum in Luxor. This educational experience unveils the ancient practice of mummifying both humans and animals, displaying tools and artifacts associated with the preservation process.

17. Stay at Hurghada and Marsa Alam

For those considering accommodations in Egypt, the resort towns of Hurghada and Marsa Alam provide beachfront hotels and a myriad of activities. From snorkeling and scuba diving to island hopping and even swimming with dolphins, these towns are a gateway to fun. At Marsa Alam, don’t miss the opportunity to encounter turtles and experience kitesurfing.

18. Admire the Karnak Temple

As the second largest temple in the world, next to Angkor Wat, Karnak Temple should be on every traveler’s list. Dating back over 2000 years, it comprises about 10 cathedrals and noteworthy sites such as the temples of Khons and Amun, the Sacred Lake, and the Avenue of Sphinxes. Additionally, make sure to visit the Karnak Open Air Museum, where reconstructed structures of the Karnak Complex can be found.

19. See the White Desert

For a refreshing break from historical exploration, consider visiting the White Desert national park, situated west of Egypt. This unique site features limestone rock formations, best appreciated through a guided tour. Experience a true Bedouin adventure with an overnight camp under starlit skies surrounded by nature.

20. Visit Alexandria

Alexandria is an ancient city located along the Mediterranean Sea, founded by Alexander the Great. Once home to one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, it is essential to visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern tribute to the ancient library of Alexandria and a major city landmark.
