Recently, Brekke Fletcher visited Nantucket, Massachusetts, for a long weekend getaway. Here, she shares some tips and insights for anyone looking to explore this charming east coast island.
Sun, surf, seafood, and seafaring were all part of the experience during a weekend trip to Nantucket, an enchanting island known for its rich whaling history, stunning architecture, picturesque beaches, and a delightful summery vibe. Although the weather didn’t cooperate, raining constantly with icy winds, we resolved not to let the gloomy forecast dampen our spirits.
My niece Ashley came in from California to join me for this little escape; we knew we had to layer up and don waterproof jackets. Our aim was to enjoy our planned activities, albeit minus the sunscreen and swimsuits.
Where Did You Stay? What Was the Vibe?
The airy, nautical design of our weekend retreat at the newly refurbished Cottages at the Boat Basin instantly put us into vacation mode. Although our cottage, Pawana, was a bit close to the street for privacy, it offered abundant comfort.
- Gleaming white bathroom with a spacious shower.
- White fluffy towels, robes, and slippers added to the cozy ambiance.
- A very comfortable bed ensured restful nights.
As special guests, we found our kitchen pre-stocked with breakfast essentials: eggs, sourdough from a local bakery, granola, yogurt, milk, and coffee. What a delightful touch!
What Was the First Thing You Did?
On our first morning, we brewed coffee and enjoyed a light breakfast in our cozy robes before heading out. Our schedule included a substantial lunch planned at TOPPER’S at The Wauwinet, which, like the Cottages, is part of the family-owned White Elephant Resorts.
With everything in downtown Nantucket just a short walk away, we strolled along the brick sidewalks, stopping for cappuccinos at Lemon Press. This bustling spot was packed, even on a chilly Friday at 11 am, hinting at how crowded it could get during the summer.
Stand-Out Dining Experiences
At TOPPER’S, we indulged in some of the best oysters I’ve ever tasted, freshly harvested from nearby waters. The atmosphere inside was both grand and intimate, with empty outdoor tables eagerly waiting for sunnier days.
- Smoked bluefish pâté served with curry lavash crackers: an unexpectedly delightful combination.
- Exemplary lobster roll served on a lightly toasted brioche: perfection!
The cocktails at Via Mare, within the historic Greydon House, were another highlight. Each cocktail was expertly crafted, featuring a superb Barrel Aged Boulevardier and a refreshing Last Night I Dreamt of San Pedro with Aperol, prosecco, and ginger. The dining setting was elegantly rich, further complemented by an eclectic and playful menu.
Add The Downyflake to your itinerary for a classic breakfast experience loved for fresh doughnuts and hearty diner fare—don’t miss their corned beef hash!
Your Favorite Experience?
The Bluff Walk in Sconset is an absolute must for anyone visiting the island. This scenic path winds along the eastern side, offering stunning views of impressive shingle-style homes dating back to the 1800s.
Although we enjoyed a solitary stroll, I learned that it could become quite congested during the peak summer months. Early mornings or an hour before sunset are the best times to avoid the crowds.
Did You Get Your Party On At All?
If a daytime gathering counts, we had an absolute blast at Cisco Brewers. It felt like a mini-festival, complete with local food trucks, live music, picnic tables, and plenty of fire pits. The lively atmosphere drew in a vibrant mix of locals and visitors, all enjoying the classic tunes of yesteryear.
The experience was top-notch, but the good times extend beyond just Cisco’s. Nantucket offers a rich tapestry of experiences for every traveler.
