Mama Shelter Lisboa is the latest location for the hotel chain, which was founded in Paris in 2008 by the Trigano family. Known for its eccentric and playful hotels in hip neighborhoods worldwide, Mama Shelter is conveniently situated in the heart of Lisbon, between the vibrant Príncipe Real and the monumental Marquis of Pombal Square. Consequently, it’s just a 10-minute walk to some of the city’s most sought-after attractions, such as Eduardo VII Park, the Botanical Garden, and Liberdade Avenue—a picturesque, tree-lined street filled with high-end shops.
Design and Sustainability
The colorful, pet-friendly hotel pays homage to Lisbon’s maritime heritage. Its emerald-green façade, covered with Viúva Lamego tiles, and the blue wave motif on the guest room carpets evoke the scenic Tagus River. According to Henrique Tiago De Castro, the hotel’s general manager, “Mama Lisboa’s rooftop offers a spectacular 360-degree view of the city. This is the perfect add-on to the unique guest experience Mama Shelter is bringing to Lisbon — sassy and flamboyant.”
Spread over eight floors, the hotel features 130 cozy guest rooms designed by an in-house team aptly named Mama Design Studio. Natural materials are thoughtfully curated throughout the interior space to emphasize sustainability; recycled bottle stoppers are used for tabletops, cork frames smart TVs, and local straw is fashioned into lampshades. Rooms are adorned with whimsical art and brightly colored furnishings, creating an inviting and vibrant atmosphere.
Rooftop Bar Experience
The sprawling rooftop, located on the ninth floor and scheduled to open on April 7, presents panoramic views of the sunset, Basílica da Estrela, and the Cristo Rei. Guests can enjoy a delicious selection of cocktails, listen to live DJ performances from Thursday to Saturday evenings, play arcade games or table soccer, and sample light bites from the bar—all while soaking in the spectacular views.
