Discovering Northern Peru: An Ultimate Travel Itinerary

Discover Northern Peru: An Itinerary for Two Weeks

  1. Mancora: 3-4 Days
  2. Chiclayo: 2-3 Days
  3. Cajamarca: 3-4 Days
  4. Trujillo: 2-3 Days
  5. Piura: 2 Days

This Peru travel itinerary showcases the best of northern Peru in just two weeks. A region often overshadowed by the iconic Machu Picchu, northern Peru offers a wealth of attractions and is frequently overlooked by many travelers. While it may lack the glamour of Lima or Cusco, you’ll find affordable prices and often have the sights all to yourself.

If you’re traveling from Ecuador, this is a fantastic itinerary for 10-14 days. Simply reverse it if coming from Lima!

Mancora: 3-4 Days

Mancora is primarily frequented by travelers either arriving from Ecuador or those who have just completed a trek to Machu Picchu and wish to unwind at the beach. Known for being a world-class surfing destination, it attracts numerous surfing enthusiasts. If you prefer an active nightlife alongside your surfing, consider staying in town.

However, if you desire a more tranquil experience, venture to one of the quieter beaches just outside Mancora. The beach hotels here offer more affordable rates, as do the local restaurants, and taxis into town only cost around $1-2.

Chiclayo: 2-3 Days

Although Chiclayo isn’t the most picturesque city, it serves as an excellent hub for exploring the famous Lord of Sipán collection. Often referred to as the King Tutankhamun of the Americas, his tomb was discovered in remarkable condition.

The museum is modern and rivals leading museums worldwide, with an admission fee of just $10 to witness its extensive collection of gold, copper, and silver artifacts. You can also take a day trip to visit the ongoing excavation of the tomb.

Cajamarca: 3-4 Days

Cajamarca stands out as my favorite location in Peru, largely unknown to many tourists. I discovered this hidden gem on a bus ride, thanks to a persuasive local.

This quaint town, nestled in the mountains, is acclaimed for its delicious cheese and chocolate. Many Peruvians visit Cajamarca for its natural hot springs, pre-Columbian aqueducts, and pre-Inca necropolis. Since most tourists are locals, day tours are affordably priced between $5-8.

Before you leave, be sure to indulge in sudado, a delightful tomato-based fish stew.

Trujillo: 2-3 Days

Trujillo is a charming colonial city that invites leisurely strolls while enjoying scenic views. Moreover, it serves as a fantastic base for day trips to ancient ruins.

Most visitors come to Trujillo to explore the famous Chan Chan ruins, an ancient city crafted from mud. With tours ranging from $5-10, allocating a few days here allows you to visit additional attractions such as the Moche Pyramids.

Piura: 2 Days

As you spend time in northern Peru, you will hear locals express how Lima has appropriated their culinary heritage. The rivalry between the big city and rural regions highlights the pride that Northern Peruvians have in their ceviche, which they believe to be the best in the country.

Gourmets seek out Piura, home to the finest ceviche, serving as an inspiration for chefs from Lima. Be sure to try the conchas negras, or black conch ceviche, which is often hailed as the crown jewel of the region.

However, if seafood is not to your liking, you might want to skip Piura, as it offers little else beyond its culinary reputation and is often considered one of the less attractive cities in Peru.

Travel Tip: Buses in northern Peru are very affordable and relatively safe, averaging around $2 per hour. Always aim to purchase directly from the bus line, as prices can double when travel agencies cater to foreign visitors.
