Top East London Dining Spots: Chef Nuno Mendes’ Favorite Restaurants

Discover East London’s Culinary Delights with Nuno Mendes

After much anticipation, Nuno Mendes’s restaurant Lisboeta opened its doors in March 2022, receiving rave reviews. Set across three floors of a charming Charlotte Street townhouse, the restaurant harnesses the essence of Portugal’s capital city within its four walls. It’s a deeply personal project for Nuno, which he describes as his “love letter to Portugal.”

Lisbon-born but London-based, Nuno has been cooking in the city since 2006, when he heard about East London’s buzz all the way in New York. Bacchus, The Loft Project and his first restaurant Viajante – which went on to receive a Michelin star – were all based in East London. Consequently, he became the East End’s biggest foodie hero. On his first visit to Hackney all those years ago, he completely fell in love with the energy of the area. “It feels very creative and bohemian,” he says, “and the food scene, in particular, is very special.”

Nuno Mendes’ East London Eats

Allegra

“Allegra is one of the most exciting restaurants in London right now. With Patrick Powell at the helm, this place is one of the rare temples of gastronomy where you can have a fantastic meal and a great time. It’s fun to eat there, and the hospitality is second to none.”

Who Comes Here?

“Allegra is a world-class destination for foodies – there is always a nice mix of creatives eating here.”

Best Table in the Restaurant?

“There is a corner table which is my favourite because you get to see both sides of the restaurant. When the weather is nice, it is great to sit outside as well.”

Best Time to Come?

“Midweek – perhaps a Tuesday or Wednesday.”

Dish to Order?

“Let the chef Paddy choose for you!”
