Inside an Ultra-Exclusive Lodge on the Fringe of Etosha National Park
Date: 23 January 2023
Set the Scene
Namibia’s iconic Etosha salt pan has long captivated the imagination of nature lovers, who are drawn to this northwestern part of the country for its astounding concentrations of wildlife. Here, where the flat, dry land seems to stretch into infinity, great herds of elephant, zebra, springbok, oryx, kudu, and eland gather around waterholes during the dry season from May to December, creating a spectacular game-watching experience.
This sheer volume of wildlife translates into prolific hunting grounds for lions, and every day presents the chance to witness the life-and-death drama of wild Africa. With the arrival of the rains from December to March, animals scatter, many give birth, and migratory birds return, bringing vibrant colors to the landscape. The salt pan itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, falls within Etosha National Park, which is one of the largest national parks in Africa. Onguma Private Nature Reserve, located on the eastern boundary, boasts five lodges, including the ultra-exclusive Camp Kala.
The Backstory
Onguma is a privately-owned 34,000-hectare nature reserve that attracts visitors interested in exploring Etosha National Park and enjoying the diverse wildlife within the reserve, which includes lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah, and black rhino. The reserve offers a variety of accommodations, catering to different preferences from the comfortable Onguma Bush Camp to the more stately The Fort, once home to Will Smith during the filming of a National Geographic documentary.
Camp Kala, which opened in November 2022, is the most luxurious lodge on the property, featuring only four suites situated around a bustling waterhole. Wildlife frequents the water throughout the day and night, allowing guests to indulge in a unique safari experience without leaving the comforts of the lodge. While other guests venture into Etosha National Park early in the morning, those at Camp Kala enjoy exclusive access to the reserve during their morning game drives.
The Rooms
The entrance to Camp Kala is intentionally understated. Upon entering the thatched reception area, guests are greeted by stunning interiors and a magnificent view centered around the waterhole. Designed by Nick Plewman Architects with interiors by Fox Browne Creative, the lodge harmoniously blends luxury with nature.
Each of the four suites is spacious and private, accessed via a raised boardwalk. With expansive glass doors opening onto a wide deck in front of the waterhole, guests can enjoy an ideal game-watching experience. Each suite includes a well-stocked personal bar, cozy lounge area, a king-size bed draped in elegant fabrics, and a luxurious bathroom equipped with a double vanity and large bathtub positioned beside the glass doors.
Food and Drink
The dining experience at Camp Kala showcases locally produced ingredients, resulting in an exceptional sense of place. Al-fresco meals are often enjoyed on the deck, where a fire pit crackles against the African night sky. Meals, which are a multi-course affair, consist of a variety of delicious options available throughout the day, ensuring that guests are well-fed during their safari adventure.
Breakfast menus feature everything from sparkling wine and fresh-pressed juices to homemade pastries and hearty African breakfast pans. Lunches offer an array of cold meats, salads, and artisanal breads, while dinner menus boast exquisite options such as game fillet and Namibian beef.
The Spa
The spa and gym facilities, designed with vast glass walls overlooking the bush, were not yet open during this review. The gym is equipped with modern fitness equipment, while the spa menu includes a range of soothing massages and facials, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure.
The Neighborhood
Camps Kala’s private waterhole attracts an array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, and giraffes, providing guests with an extraordinary viewing experience. While lounging at the lodge is a delightful option, guided drives allow for exploration within the reserve or into Etosha National Park. Additionally, guests can participate in interpretive bush walks or experience a night on the Dream Cruiser, a unique converted Land Cruiser equipped with amenities for a memorable overnight stay.
The Service
Each suite has a dedicated butler who acts as the guest’s primary contact for meals, activities, and any needed assistance. Guests enjoy twice-daily game drives led by knowledgeable guides, ensuring a rich and insightful wildlife experience. The staff at Camp Kala aim to create a welcoming atmosphere, making every visitor feel at home.
For Families
Children over the age of 12 are welcomed, while younger children may stay if the entire lodge is booked for exclusive use.
Eco Effort
Camp Kala charges a conservation levy specifically aimed at protecting the reserve’s black rhino population. The lodge also contributes to the local community by employing over 180 individuals and supplying fresh vegetables both to the lodges and to the broader Namibian market.
Accessibility for Those with Mobility Impairments
While there are some stairs within the lodge, and the bathrooms are not wheelchair friendly, the constant stream of wildlife at the waterhole allows guests to experience the beauty of nature without venturing far.
