Optimal Times for Exploring Moab’s Desert Wildflowers and Stargazing

Moab and its environs are easily accessible – and amazing – year-round.

However, since the weather plays a major factor in outdoor adventures, it’s worth some thought to when you want to explore this beautiful area. Ultimately, there is no “bad time” to visit Moab; the only question you need to ponder is, “Will I have enough time?”

March through early May and September through October are considered high seasons, providing perfect weather ideal for hiking and mountain biking. Summer can become crowded, but temperatures exceeding 100°F (38°C) deter some visitors. In winter, although there’s a chance for snow, this period often offers solitude, although some activities like rafting may be limited.

On the other hand, consider visiting in late spring to avoid the crowds and to enjoy the blooming wildflowers or breathtaking desert landscapes covered in a light dusting of snow.

High Season in Moab for Outdoor Adventures

Spring in Moab is truly magical. If sufficient rainfall occurs during winter, the desert blooms beautifully. With cooler weather and rushing rivers, this season attracts many, although crowds can be expected in the national parks. To maximize your experience, consider starting your day early or enjoying the late-night starry skies, as both Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park are open around the clock.

During early summer months, especially around May or June, expect thrilling whitewater conditions on the Colorado and Green Rivers. This season is great for hiking and mountain biking, but be alert for unexpected storms and flash floods.

Fall is another prime time in Moab as the summer vacation crowd thins out, especially after school starts. As autumn progresses, the weather remains pleasant and camping with an RV or staying in hotels becomes a great option as evenings can become quite chilly.
