“It’s completely unique,” says Beverly Hills-based travel advisor Leah Winck. “You’re on stilts in this house in the middle of the ocean, completely surrounded by water. There is nothing in the world quite like it.” Winck recalls her unforgettable experience in Bora Bora, where her villa had a glass-bottomed floor, allowing her to watch the vibrant underwater life directly below.
The Origin of Overwater Bungalows
Overwater bungalows were first conceived in 1962, when three young Californians opened a hotel called Bali Ha’i in Mo’orea, inspired by the island’s natural beauty. A few years later, the “Bali Ha’i Boys” created free-standing structures resembling traditional fishermen’s shacks hovering above the water, leading to the concept of overwater bungalows. Today, there are approximately 9,000 of these private villas worldwide, with around 1,000 in French Polynesia alone.

The majority of these luxurious villas are located in the Maldives, accounting for about 6,000 of them. The bungalows range from charming thatched structures to cutting-edge design marvels. Many offer private butlers and all boast incredible views of the vibrant sea and endless horizon.

As demand for these limited luxury accommodations continues to rise, particularly in the accessible Caribbean areas, finding availability has become a challenge. “If you want a full week in an overwater bungalow, you have to plan well in advance,” warns Sarah Key, a travel expert.

While the experience can be costly, affordable options do exist, with certain bungalows available for as low as $300 a night in the Maldives and around $400 in Fiji. However, the remote locations often require significant effort to reach, making these stays a bucket-list goal for many travelers.
