A UK festival is an experience unlike any other. Come rain or shine, festivalgoers sling on their bumbags, slap on their suncream and head out into well-trodden mud paths to support their favourite acts. However, packing for a festival is a tricky task at the best of times – not least when you’re faced with the UK’s unpredictable weather. Below, we’ve created the ultimate guide to packing for UK festivals, featuring all of the gadgets, gizmos, clothing, and essentials you shouldn’t forget.
Essentials
A Day Bag
You’ve got through the gates, pitched your tent, and unpacked all your essentials. Now it’s time to start loading up your day bag so you can head out and explore. A sturdy, smaller rucksack is great for festivals where you’re allowed to take in your own drinks – the weight is easier to manage as you move around the site. Opt for a smaller bum bag that’s just big enough to fit in your phone, a portable charger, a bank card, and some SPF as well. Moth Drinks has just released a game-changing option – a crossbody bag that doubles up as a drinks cooler, so you can carry your cocktail cans and beers around without them getting too warm.
A Power Bank
Keeping your phone charged at a festival is no easy feat – often, you’re camping without access to mains power for four or five days, and queues for charging tents on-site can be long. Therefore, save yourself the trouble by packing a decent portable charger. We recommend a power bank that charges your device fully at least three times, if not more, and taking one charger per device you plan to charge up while away.
Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially at a festival. Pack a reusable water bottle that will keep your water cold and refill it at water stations around the camp. Before heading out each day, fill up a camping water bottle and leave it at the tent – that way, you can rehydrate when you return without having to venture out in the dark.
A Raincoat
If you’re attending a festival in the UK, there’s a good chance there will be at least some rain. Therefore, packing a waterproof jacket is essential. A water-repellant jacket will keep you dry, but if it’s warm as well as wet, consider a lighter-weight option, such as a rain poncho. Additionally, pack more t-shirts, socks, and pants than there are days to ensure you have dry clothing once the weather clears.
Clothing
Slip-on Shoes
While you’ll spend most of your time on-site in comfortable trainers or wellies, a pair of slip-on shoes is necessary. They’re perfect for walking around at your camp or making middle-of-the-night dashes to the toilet.
A Warm Jumper
Even if the weather forecast predicts glorious sunshine, do not underestimate how cold festival sites can be at night. Pack at least one warm jumper for when the sun goes down to stay comfortable while enjoying the festivities.
Camping Gear
A Camping Chair
While we’re not recommending sitting at the front of a packed main stage, packing a small, foldable chair will preserve your energy and give you a place to sit during the day. If your festival has restrictions, consider bringing something water-repellant to sit on.
Tent
The type of tent depends on your needs; however, ensure that it is waterproof to provide a comfortable escape from the elements during your stay.
Sleeping Bag
A sleeping bag for UK festivals should be warm enough for cooler nights but light enough for warmer days. Selecting a waterproof option is also beneficial to avoid moisture and spills.
Camping Pillow
A camping pillow enhances your comfort, helping to prevent neck pain from sleeping on the ground. While a rolled-up jumper can do in a pinch, having a proper pillow can make a difference.
Toiletries
Eye Mask
To ensure a restful sleep amidst the festival chaos, consider packing a quality eye mask to block out bright light during the early mornings.
Hand Sanitiser
Festival toilets can be less than ideal. Thus, bringing your own hygiene supplies, such as hand sanitiser, is a practical choice to maintain cleanliness during your stay.
Beauty
SPF
With prolonged time spent outdoors, packing sufficient sunscreen is paramount to protect your skin from sunburn.
Eco-Wipes
Biodegradable body wipes can help keep you clean and fresh during multi-day festivals. Choosing eco-friendly options is a great way to be environmentally conscious.
Other Essentials
Remember to pack a few more essentials such as a torch, bin bags for rubbish, a cozy blanket, and snacks. Always include plenty of toilet paper for your comfort and convenience.
