Master Sign Language at Paris’ Premier Deaf-Owned Moroccan Restaurant

Experience the Unique Charm of 1000&1 Signes in Paris

The red, blue, and yellow hands glowing outside the Parisian restaurant 1000&1 Signes hint at the unique experience that awaits inside. Upon entering, you are greeted by a warm smile and a broad gesture from the owner, Sid Nouar, the first Deaf person to open a restaurant in France.

A Welcoming Space for All

Nouar does not cater exclusively to Deaf diners; rather, he aims to educate hearing customers about French Sign Language (langue des signes française, or LSF) and encourage interactions between Deaf and hearing guests. This effort is particularly admirable in a culinary hotspot like Paris, where the quality of the food must match the restaurant’s unique mission.

Exceptional Moroccan Cuisine

Fortunately, the dishes at 1000&1 Signes, inspired by Nouar’s Moroccan mother, are remarkable. From sublime lentil soup to tender tagines, including a fez-shaped chocolate cake, the menu is a celebration of Moroccan flavors.

The Ambiance and Experience

On a recent visit, I arrived early to enjoy the cozy atmosphere of this small restaurant, which accommodates just 24 guests. As I found my seat, enticing aromas of sautéed onions and spices filled the air. My order of lamb and prune tagine arrived in a traditional conical pot, ensuring it was tender and flavorful.

Diverse Diners, Unique Communication

Interestingly, about eighty percent of 1000&1 Signes’ patrons are hearing, drawn to this highly-rated Moroccan restaurant located in the busy 11th arrondissement. Guests often walk in unaware that the staff communicates through gestures. As the diners enthusiastically say “Bonsoir,” some are understandably puzzled when greeting is met with warm, silent smiles.

Innovative Ordering Methods

When the time comes to order, guests have several options for communication. They can point to dishes, form the corresponding handshape for letters next to each menu entry, or use a small erasable board provided at each table for more detailed conversations.

Generous Moroccan Hospitality

Nouar embodies the Moroccan tradition of hospitality, treating each guest as family. His ability to communicate creatively ensures every dining experience is smooth and enjoyable, whether by miming actions or displaying orders on his iPad.

Overcoming Challenges

After originally opening his restaurant in a smaller location in 2011, Nouar faced the challenge of a high unemployment rate among Deaf individuals. Despite the challenges of finding experienced staff, his perseverance paid off; today, 1000&1 Signes stands as a beacon of inclusivity and exquisite culinary experience.

Prepared for New Success

In 2018, Nouar reopened 1000&1 Signes in a larger venue, symbolized by his logo, which features stylized hands representing both the hamsa talisman of good fortune and the language of signs. The restaurant continues to thrive, celebrated for its delicious food and innovative approach to communication.

Unique Desserts Worth Trying

For dessert, I indulged in Nouar’s latest creation, a chocolate cake decorated as a fez. This delightful treat, honed to perfection over three months with the help of a Moroccan pastry chef, embodies the essence of 1000&1 Signes—attention to detail, warmth, and exceptional Moroccan flavors.

Conclusion

1000&1 Signes offers an unforgettable dining experience that transcends the usual restaurant atmosphere. With outstanding Moroccan cuisine and a heartwarming approach to communication, this unique establishment not only meets the needs of its customers but enriches the cultural tapestry of Paris.
